Comic strip promotion
posted Monday, November 01, 2004 - 12:01 AM (#21720)
Looks like the other threads have timed out once more, and I do actually have something to add, so consider this the new "tell us about your comic" thread.

Anyway. Spells and Whistles [spellsandwhistles.net] is back in business.

Tauhid Bondia (the artist behind syndicated comic Suzie View) has quit his job to focus full-time on comicking. Don't worry, there's no big donation drive or anything, he just made the decision to build up S&W into a business. The strip's funny and the art is absolutely beautiful, so if you've got the time it's worth a look.

Wow thsi is weird, this thread shows as an unread in the blatant section but clicking on that didn't show it, clicking on the post title didn't show it, but clicking on tynics user detail and then most recent post got me here.

Cool.

Of course I had lunch beer (tomorrow is melbourne cup which makes today kind of like a semi friday so I am allowed semi lunch beer, which means twice as many drinks but smaller glasses) and so i could have just been missing the actual links....

Still doesn't show in the list after my post. Cool I guess this is my thread to say anything I like in because no one could possibly be as smart as me to find it....

Bush is going to win!!! why? it's funnier that way hehehehe

Number of americans killed in the Iraq thing is tending towards the number of americans killed in the tower thing.

This is not so funny.

N Korea has a well trained and supplied army. Afghanistan and Iraq didn't.

This could be least funniest of all.

I think it's because GWB can't understand the Korean accent that is the main problem. And that they have nukes. and possibly a korean form of Ninja.

I'm just going to say that...

It's now officially the "post-ironic" age. And ironically-not-quite-breaking-the-fourth-wall is not funny or clever.

It doesn't even get an ironic "heh".

Yeah. He has a tendency to do self-aware humour on occasion, and I can't say I'm a fan. I've never seen it pulled off well, come to think about it. Except maybe in 1/0.

Although there is one comic in which he essentially calls Scott Kurtz a giant arse, which made me snicker.

That would be Benjamin Franklin. I'm pretty sure that even in his current state (food for worms, according to his self-penned epitaph), he could take you two falls out of three. He has amazing electric super-powers.

Under the right conditions, yes. But I would less about bone, and more about your nice, moist organs. Like Dr Acker always used to tell us back in power lab:
If you are unlucky in here, you will take 100 mA through your chest cavity, go into cardiac arrest, and die. If you are very unlucky, you will take 400 mA through your chest cavity, go into cardiac arrhythmia, and die slowly and painfully. I would suggest you avoid both of these.
I hated power lab. And I think that Benjy could easily deliver enough zap to cook your nice, moist organs, or to pop your heart into unnatural (albeit, toe-tappingly catchy) beat patterns.

Yes, I did know, and that wasn't the point.

There's a long, sordid and involved history between Tauhid and Kurtz that gets obliquely referenced occasionally in the comic. Knowing this history, which clearly you don't, then gives another layer of meaning to some of the dialogue. My point was simply that that was the only occasion upon which I found breaking the fourth wall to be even remotely amusing.

Why should it matter if it gets dark at 5pm (and actually, I think it's 6); dark, light, who the fuck cares? I personally like the dark - as I'm in it so frequently - what I don't like is the cold. When it gets too cold to do anything, that's when I head inside.

And you might notice, if you pay attention, that it gets a few degrees colder when the sun goes down.

So are you more likely to be able to take advantage of a few extra degrees for an hour early in the morning or early in the evening?

And here (Virginia), the sun is starting to set by 5, though it's not totally dark til closer to 6. But a month from now, it'll be mostly set by 5. In Boston, by mid-December it's pitch black at 4:30. That's just obnoxious.

Yeah, I was leaving work at 4:30 yesterday, and thought I was going to need a flashlight to find my car. I can't wait until the sun is fully set by the time in a few weeks.
