Tell us about more of your comic strips
posted Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 05:03 PM (#19403)
Since the other "Tell us about your comic strips" has been locked due to inactivity, I'm being a nice guy and starting this one.

Please post your website address as a link, rather than a plain text. You should know that much HTML, really. It's good for you!

I have (1 day 1 week ago) started a comic that recently hijacked the "everything Must Go" Thread. I'm very sorry to the owners, but zamphir hadn't been nice yet.

Internal Burning [internalburning.tk]

If you come now, you'll have been there at the beginning, like jon said about "A Lesson Is Learned..."

Not much of a plot yet, but feel free to send ideas or names for characters other than the just-named Charlie to matt@InternalBurning.tk [mailto]

Thanks Zamphir!

ok, here's the thing, dude: I checked out your comic when you first posted it, and now I can't remember what it was like. So that's not a good sign. I probably will take another look, but if you're really looking to hook readers from goats, then may I suggest:

1. Participating in a forum OTHER than Blatant Self-Promotion
2. Linking to the comic in your sig.

We're far more likely to go read stuff by people we've interacted with.

I've had another look. Do you actually want c&c? if not, don't read further.

I won't say much about the art itself: you're at the beginning stage, and you'll get better with practise. Look at the early goats stuff, after all. But your panel layouts need work. You're making some common but easily remedied mistakes that can really drag down even a good comic: For example, in the one that's currently up, you have some boring profile shots and you're cutting off the back of people by the frame edge. It gives the appearance of not having planned your layout properly, or being unable to draw bottoms and backs of heads. In earlier comics, you have much more dynamic layouts, so clearly you're capable of better. Try 3/4 views - much more visually interesting than profile shots.

Secondly, I notice you've switched from a typed font to hand-lettered. I have nothing against hand-lettering, and it often looks better than computer fonts, but ... yours isn't really legible, and it's uneven and looks sloppy. Also, you're not planning your word balloons properly, so the writing gets crammed up and the balloons have to take weird paths around the art. Again, this comes down to one thing - plan your panels before you draw them.

Thirdly, I don't find it funny. But that's a personal thing, if other people do, then kudos.

Here's some random advice from someone who may or may not be qualified to give it:

1) Create a uniform comic width. It'll make the presentation seem more familiar or something. It'll just make for a more visually appealing presentation. Turst me on this one.

2)Use a better pen to ink the comics (or stop scanning pencil drawings. It's hard to tell what you're drawing with.) I like Pigma Micron Fine Line and Graphical pens, but used whatever is comfortable. Something that doesn't smear easily is nice. Really, jsut have the scan's darkness and contrast be uniform among comics as best as possible

3) I don't really understand any of the jokes/don't find them funny. Sorry.

So, please come back in a few weeks, or a week and tell me if it has gotten better!

Oh Hell, since nobody else is biting on this topic, I might as well open myself up for criticism.

Got me a comic at baldninja.com [baldninja.com] that is just begging to be looked at.

It features two generally normal humans based loosely on myself and a friend (which has been done before, granted) and some other people and beings which aren't real people. THere is a female with wings. They go on wacky adventures based largely on anything I can daydream up. Sometimes stories are also based on real conversations I've had with people. Real conversations are good fodder especially due to the fact that I have strange conversations with weird people.

I started it to practice drawing. Bear that in mind as the art starts out completely horrible and moves up to something surprisingly better. You'll have to decide if you think it made it to "good," but there is a sharp distinction between the first comic and the current comics.

Much of the early comic is hit or miss, in my eyes. Since I've started actually planning things out better and spending more time in thought, I'd like to hope newer material is better, so I'd ask that you review and/or criticise constructively the comic in sections.

Anything before the Satis Corp series is what I consider to be the early comic. Anything after and including is the newer comic.

Enjoy. Don't cut me in too many places, please.

Alrighty, shameless plugging by invite. This here is what life is all about. My buddy and I do a webcomic we call "Tossers" at http://tossers.keenspace.com [keenspace.com] Despite our mission to find a way to offend everyone in the world, it does tend to be a moderately amusing little comic with art that varies in quality depending on what kind of mood I'm in when I pick up the pencil. Jokes are based in geek pop culture and sex jokes. So, there we are, shamelessly linked on the website of a much older and solidly funny comic. The joys of modern advertising.

OK. I've got one:
      The Monkey Project .
Now on its 73rd strip, the Monkey Project is about an intelligent monkey who forges an alliance with an arcade owner and her bouncer roommate to evade the scientific experiment that made the monkey super-smart. Anyways check it out at The Monkey Project [monkeyproject.com]. Also, I couldn't resist putting Jon and Phillip in the comic today, so lawsuits can be directed toward me via e-mail at the site.

Tell me what y'all think!

What's the point of advertising your comment if you can't even make an account to go with it?

Poop is generally not inspiring for a comic.

I was referring to you being an anonymous goat herder with the avatar of Scott "Poopyhead" Baio.

Look back through the goats archives for appearances of said shithead and you'll understand my comment.

As for the consistency of poop, I'll deffer to Scott.

Now that there is a name, I feel free to tell you that although the comic doesn't catch my sense of humor, the illustration is very well done. I enjoy the style and the coloring is exquisite.

The website itself is very well crafted as well and works quite nicely. But you may want to get rid of whatever popup firefox is blocking when one enters the site.
