The usual breakage
posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 - 10:54 PM (#36186)

While some have been snarking about how I may have to deal with remnants of slashcode [goats.com] myself, I want to be very clear that you are all nowhere near prolific enough for that error to take me more than 5 minutes to fix.

However, that are other issues I've had to deal with, so watch out for bugs as of now.

While back in the day, this forum code was loosely based on slash, it has since diverged greatly. Even when launched, I had made a lot of database changes to use foreign keys, and accommodate something more in line with what was needed for Goats as of that day.

Since then, major things I've had to ad include:

  • full text search
  • integration with front page news posting (a behind the scenes changes that should have been unnoticed by most of you)
  • polls within posts

Recently, I started making changes to integrate a new client [overcompensating.com], and it was the hay bale that broke the camels back. Getting some features working for him, was just not going to easily hack its way in.

So, instead of working on getting his site integrated, I rewrote the forums posting code, for starting discussions, replying to comments, etc.

Consider this an open thread to discuss bugs in that code, as well as the thousands of outstanding issues I haven't gotten around to fixing yet. Hopefully with the rewrite, they'll be easier to deal with going forward.

I don't mind being an Initiate when I preview, but it might bug out other people.

Oh, and the first time I tried to post a response to your "What's broken" question, nothing got posted. LOL!

Personally, I think that the fact that none of my messages show up at all is an excellent example of something that needs to be fixed. Can it have something to do with the message being really long, or is it because it's you?

Well, one noticeable bug already - it says there are three replies to this thread, but when I open it I can only see Phillip's OP.

I predict that two of the other replies are saying the exact same thing.

Hows'bout the fact that I can only see the title post in this thread.

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
