Innocence lost.
posted Thursday, May 12, 2005 - 04:11 PM (#27243)
I had my first Hefeweizen last night. It was creamy and light and delicious. I prefer to drink beer on tap, you see, and never before had I met a bar that had it.

I'm visiting Austin at the moment, mainly as an exploritory mission to see if it's truly as fun as my advance scouts reported. Upstate NY is kinda dull, and murderous on dating.

So far I've experienced the Alamo Drafthouse and good beer, so I have a favorable impression right now. Any of you out there have things to recommend/see/do in Austin?

Who's Hefe?

Weihenstephaner?

Bob Schneider is a good show, if you can find him.

Weihenstephaner?

I have yet to see that on tap outside of the Peculiar. Have there been other sightings?

I buy enough of that stuff that my local purveyor has started carrying bottles just for me.

Maybe I have a problem.

My local pub has it on occasion.

Lucky

The only 'hefe' I can get on tap in this area is Harpoon's UFO. I've gotten pretty used to it, and it's halfway decent with alot of lemon.

Actually, I'm usually pretty psyched to see it when I'm out, because my choices are usually limited to Sam Adams, Bud and Guiness.

I've seen it at a bar in Boston. But usually, if you want hefe around here, it's Harpoon UFO or Blue Moon. Neither of which I dislike.

Hmmm, someone WOULD ask that question. I must have had several that night...

But I'm pretty sure that it was at the Other Side, which is across Mass Ave from Newbury Street in Boston. They have quite a beer selection, as well as a lot of other good stuff--worth going to even if I'm incorrect.

As for Blue Moon, I'm not a huge fan, but I like it.

It's probably not very helpful, but since you're asking for sightings, I found some on tap in a bar in Berlin last year. It was nice. And offered in litre glasses.

I'm pretty sure MacGregor's in Rochester, NY has Weihenstephaner on tap. And I know it has two varieties of Franziskaner. And it has a few hefe's from other breweries too, but I can't be arsed to remember which ones because it's been over a year since I've been there.

If they do, they've added it in the last four years or so. That used to be one of my regular haunts while at RIT. Man that place was great.

I still drank the Konig Ludwig more often though.

I swear, I didn't know at the time! I was young and foolish, and the trendy burrito place's bartender suggested it because they were all out of Strongbow and K (I likes me Burritos with me ciders, yar.)

But yeah, I drank something owned by Coors (which was bad) and I admitted it here (which was worse). I await the flogging and public humiliation.

I had heard "good" things about it. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it on tap at my local 250+ beers on tap place. It wasn't half bad...at the least it wasn't another pilsner. Then I tried it out of the bottle (when my choices were extremely limited). That stuff is skunk!!!

Moral of the story - its a horrible horrible beer in the bottle, deserving of the name Coors. On tap, it will suffice if there isn't better around.

Ah, here we go!

I used to drink it a bit at a local pool place a few years ago, until finding out that PBR was $1. Back then, it seemed less likely that it was a Coors confection. It beat the 'Oregon' beer brewed in Cincinatti, I will say.
