Misc Forum Changes
posted Monday, April 18, 2005 - 12:40 PM (#26785)

I just made a couple of changes to the forum code to deal with having removed some of the comments from our weekend LG schmuck. It finally motivated me to deal with the "no latest comment" bug after deleting comments.

If you notice anything very broken because of these changes, post your observations here.

If, on the other hand, you like cole slaw, then congratulations!

... any reason you delete the comments, as opposed to just modding 'em down to -1?

I deleted a lot of them. For the most part, they were just blithering idiots spewing stupidity; nothing with any merit at all. LGs with nothing to add don't get consideration here.

I can also state with a fairly high degree of certainty that neither of us has ever randomly deleted a post of anyone who is registered.

If you're willing to stand behind what you say, then we're all for it getting made fun of.

Oh, I wasn't crying "Foul Play!" or anything... I was just thinking that if the forum is slash-based [slashcode.com] (guessing on the mentions of "AC" on the help pages) then the mechanisim is in place to moderate to all hell but not really to delete. I missed all the crap LG posts (and don't really mean to further the discussion of 'em), I was just wondering why the means that are already in place weren't used.

It's not actually "slash-based", this forum right here.

Phillip rewrote slash.

And has probably refactored it since, and otherwise left very little of the starting point in place.

And like most things here, you shouldn't guess about the codebase. You should search for answers... ;-)

I wouldn't go that far, I definitely re-factored large portions of the general bits of slash [slashcode.com], partly just to get it working with "real" URLS instead of the ugly slash ones, partly to get rid of all the stuff we didn't need (stories, etc), and partly just to get it working under Mason [masonhq.com]. But once I got closer to the ugly internal bits, I was getting tired, so a lot of that (utility functions, mostly) it's a fairly direct translation.

You should also all probably avoid this [staggernation.com] page.

That explains who we ship Phillip with.

... Oh, lord, my brain just pictured an entire page of Phillip/Ken slash, complete with badly-photoshopped 'pictures,' and this little part of me has been broken beyond repair now.

The rest wants to do it just to freak people out, though.
