Fibonacci Days
posted Thursday, February 03, 2005 - 10:44 AM (#24846)

Using American style dates, today would be 2/3/5, which in my mind makes it a Fibonacci day.

To celebrate, I plan on consuming some whiskey, and then lots of beer. How do you plan on celebrating this oh-so-rare mathematical holiday?

I have a feeling a lot of people are waiting until March 2. I suggest you celebrate on both days to be sure.

To perform this celebration the size of each round should be the sum of the two previous.

So you must start by ordering only 1 whiskey (glad to see the e) and then a beer.

The next round should be 1 whiskey and 1 beer, then:
1 whiskey + 2 beers
2 whiskey + 3 beers
3 whiskey + 5 beers
etc.

Alternatively, start with the beer and then the whiskey. Good luck!

Here in Britain we will have to wait until 2nd March...

But you are right. Celebrate both days to be sure, to be sure.

In Hungary the dates are written Y.M.D, so there will be another Fibonacci Day on 12th July!

I cannot believe that I actually got that wrong. I wrote down the numbers to make sure that I had it right; which I did not. Today’s lesson is 3 + 5 = 8 and not 7 as previously believed. This stupidity was brought to you by someone who designs software for banks.

As a penance, I will now go to the pub and practice counting.

Square Days (Score: 2)

When i was a kid (age 11, actually) my dad told me that we happened to be on the third "square day" of his lifetime, assuming we were using the typical American notation. He was born shortly before 7/7/49, was in his mid-teens on 8/8/64, and was having this discussion with me on 9/9/81. The next square day which would occur was to be the first day of the third millenium: 1/1/01. Almost exactly one year ago, we passed 2/2/04. So i guess our next would be 3/3/09.

This is utterly trivial and pointless, but your topic reminded me of this issue. What really gladdens me is the fact that you see reason to celebrate on arbitrary holidays! That's the spirit! I will join you in a toast to frivolous arithmetic! Hooray! [And i'm only toasting you with a 'Hippy Speedball' (coffee and cannabinoids), but i feel it's of the same general intent. Those of you who get your knickers in a twist over things like non-alcoholic substances can all get over it already :-)]

One point six one eight (et cetera) cheers!

You really have turned over a new leaf. I thought all holidays were arbitrary!

Also, as you've given up self-deprecation, you do realise (in order to maintain equilibrium) that you will be required to apply some deprecation unto others. I know this because the practice has been passed down from our ancestors.

I like the idea of being celebratory for spontaneous reasons. It seems more interesting to me than the usual practise of repeatedly paying attention to archaic traditions ("passed down from ancestors"), as those often devolve into arbitrariness anyway when experienced in a contemporary context.

Nevertheless: Happy New Year of the Cock! It's what comes after the Monkey!

Does someone mathematically inclinded - as opposed to me, who is only theoretically mathematically inclide - care to discuss the frequency of "prime birthdays".

That is, birthdays in which the entire date (regardless of order) consists of prime number components...

I mean, sure, in my case, this is pretty easy, as one of the date figures is a 7 and the other is... another prime number larger than 10 and less than 20.

So that just leaves the year to be prime for me to have a "prime birthday".

But I'd think that, for instance, people born in either April or on the 4th day of any month could never have a prime birthday.

So I wonder how many people, statistically speaking, would likely be able to have prime birthdays.

And as far as the interest involved in repeatedly paying attention to archaic traditions, why not just treat them as you would any other spontaneous reason and celebrate anyway? Celebrating is fun, regardless of what it is you're celebrating.

No, he's apparently not around. But it was Philip who suggested celebrating. I have no idea whether dear ol' Leonardo fêted dates with mathematical significance, or whether he only heeded traditional dates, or whether he celebrated anything at all. So it hardly seems fair to give him all the credit for today's(1) toast, when Philip is the wise fellow who suggested whiskey, beer, and whatever else we fancy.

Tangentially, i celebrated two days ago. It was the day that i called 'Sun Return'; it wasn't directly related to a traditional solstice, it was just a personal circumstances issue. My favorite window faces northwest, and every year at my latitude (about 49 North) there is a period from late November until about February when the sun's rays do not shine directly into my room because they're occluded by Lummi Island [lummi-island.com], and also by the corner of our roof during the period right around the actual solistice.

Tuesday was the first day after two and a half months that the beams came back in for a couple brief minutes and illuminated my happy place before the sun set. That was my official signal that spring is coming soon and the darkness is diminishing. I celebrated appropriately. [Although i think my definition of "appropriately" is different from most other people's. It probably uses more batteries, too.]

I'm not sure Australians have tea anymore... pretty sure new zealanders do but aside from he who controls the code and I there are no kiwis here, I don't think, and I don't believe either of us are likely to be holding to firm to any new zealand terminology, it just confuses the hell out of people.

Cool that you are aware of the term though.
