Tack. Or possibly fact. Tact is where I don't call you a moron cos you don't know the difference/can't type.

When did Microsoft buy Disney?
But seriously, when did the outcry for real time minor league scoring start? I'm a big baseball fan but that's a bit much for me.

Common sense is where you don't call me a moron because you know based on your own personal experiences that when I make mistakes of this nature, it is due to simple typographic failures, rather than any mental difficiencies.

And stealing information from someone else's website and then reselling it is definately a different standard of tact.

I think that grouping "touch" as a single sense is sort of silly, too. But i suppose this is all a bit of nit-picking, which somehow feels extra-provoked by mcgrue's use of the the word "exhaustive" :-) We all could probably agree empirically that our "common" senses are comprised of myriad overlapping and complementary aspects of our sensoria, which are not easily reduced to a short list.

Unless I'm off my rocker, they are both handled with the same part of the brain. Blame your nose's hardware for being faulty... or more likely your environment for having too many strong odors so that your sense of smell never developed to a fine-tuned state.

My sense of smell sucks too, tho.

On that note, I'm not sure if balance is done with the same part as hearing. Balance seems like a distinct sense, tied right into your little ear-borne water level. But in the intrest of Self-Righteous Arrogance, I'll claim it doesn't exist. :D

Actually, it's my brain's hardware that's faulty. I fell down some stairs as a very young child, and have never had any sense of smell since then. (I mean zip, I can stick my head in a bucket of bleach and not even notice). I've never been too fussed about it, so I'm not sure of the neurophysiology, but typing 'anosmia' into google just then has yielded this site [maxuk.net], ... which tells me that it's my 'smell nerve' which is probably damaged, not my brain.

Interesting. OK, point conceded - same sense, conveyed by parallel pathways which operate independently. (I just realised my original post sounded a bit snarky - it wasn't meant to be).

I think you mean this site [maxuk.net] (left out the l at the end of the address). I'm guessing only part of your olfactory nerve is damaged if you are able to pick out flavors other than sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and apparently something called umami [glutamate.org]. Other flavors are caused by gases released in the mouth and detected by sensors in the back of the nasal cavity.

To answer mcgrue, hearing and balance share a cranial nerve but are detected in different parts of the ear. The hearing sensors are in part of the cochlear (looks like a snail shell) in outer part of the inner ear. Balance is mostly detected by the semicircular canals (three looping structures) further in the inner ear, behind the cochlear.
