Converting the unbelievers
posted Wednesday, April 14, 2004 - 02:17 PM (#15922)
I have a friend who I'm trying to hook on Goats, but he's only seen a couple recent strips and just doesn't get it. He's not the type who would read through the entire archive, so I'm looking for some great, stand-alone (or small-series) strips that will convert him to our cause.

Any suggestions? (ie: post links)

POLL: What should be done to Goats unbelievers?

8% (3) They should be left to their own devices.

30% (11) They should be forcefully converted to the cause.

11% (4) They should be gently persuaded to join us.

11% (4) They should be gathered up and locked away.

38% (14) They should be brutally and horribly killed.
36 people have voted in this poll. (This poll is not active.)

I personally like those little things called "lobotomies".

*holds up a pair of scalpels, and a bloody hacksaw*

To start with a obvious suggestion, what about "kittens = pop tarts"?

From reports I've gotten, the best results for introducing reluctant folks is to get them a set of books. People will read lots of comics in a book even if they won't click through a lot of webpages. Human behavior and all that.

So I suggest you all go and purchase a set of books for your loved ones. Immediately.

Ahem.

The one's that got me hooked were a couple of the large colour Sundays - the one with phillip and diablo playing 'chess', and dungeons and hamsters. I was sent the links by a friend, and after I read them I just had to find out more. Might I suggest a similar strategy for your reluctant convert?

Okay, I really want to vote for both "They should be gathered up and locked away." AND "They should be forcefully converted to the cause."

OH! That's your point. On the end of that, well, sorry, it's not even a stick. It's too small to be a stick. It's a twig - maybe.

Not to ignore the dimwit, but as far as preaching Goats goes...
I mention the strip casually once in while, send links and stuff. I've shared my "Republicans for Voldemort" stickers around. My best friend since ninth grade has a sense of humor very similar to mine, so I've talked it up a lot with him, but he never told me if he'd read the strip at all.

So imagine my surprise when I received a copy of "Tasty, Yet Morally Ambiguous" in the mail yesterday. Since it was straight from Jon to me, I got confused, think Jon had for some reason decided to send it, then thinking I accidentally ordered it when i got my anger three-pack. Eliminating the impossible, I figured out that my friend had ordered it as a birthday present for me! Yay, it is shiny! So I have apparently ascended to loony fan-boy status in my promotion of Goats (at least, I'm sure my wife thinks so).

Of course I haven't confirmed that he bought it yet, or that he didn't steal my credit card number to order it. Hmmm...

This thread has been remarkably unproductive. Nobody has posted a single link, yet look at all the posts!

I remember Jon talked about making a teaser page to hand out at comic-cons a while ago. Did anyone ever get a copy of that, or remember which comics were on it?

Assuming it's the one he used a bit over a year ago (as of UberCon I) it was a lovely little double-sided glossy number. I haven't the slightest idea where my copy is now, unfortunately, but I distinctly remember Gregor Mendel and the "Monotremes and Obscenity" content.

Suffice it to say yes: it exists, yes: people have it, and yes: those people (or at least two of them) are now regular Goats readers.
