Starting Discussions
posted Friday, January 30, 2004 - 07:51 AM (#13641)
I was working on preventing multiple postings...one could argue that I was quite successful.

Starting discussions should work again, and I'm watching stuff now, so hopefully any further snags will be corrected more quickly.

This post serves both to test starting discussions, and thereby see if I was actually successful, and to let you know what happened.

I think if I've fixed a bug, I can start drinking for today....right?

I personally find that many bugs are easier to fix if you've already been drinking - especially when dealing with perl.
As an aside, is there any chance of adding the ability to delete your own post if it has no replies? I know a couple of times I've either posted something, and then thought of something I'd like to add to that post, and just have to make another post instead. I'm generally against the idea of being able to go back and edit posts, but being able to nuke them in certain situations might be nice.

Why did you stop drinking yesterday?

Or do you hold to the old adage "Never drink and program, you might crash"?

Cause that would be really unexpected, if you did.

But, honestly, this early in the day you're better starting with Irish Coffee than with something like beer.

Although, one could argue that a nice raspberry wheat is really a breakfast beer...

In Response to jferg (#13643):

Editing comments [goats.com] was one of the first things we discussed on the forums. I lean towards not allowing deleting for the same reasons discussed there, even if it has no direct replies. Partly this is because the reply to the comment might be listed as a reply to the discussion, depending on which "reply" button the replier clicked on, or it might still be referred to in some other post in the same discussion. And partly specifically because those comments reflect on the poster.

I mean, if we let MacDancer delete some of his posts we all wouldn't know how low the average intelligence is in his neck of the woods that he's slightly above.

mmm...gratuitous insults..... and hanging prepositions!

I went for the Irish coffee option.

except without the coffee or the whipped cream.

and with a scottish whiskey instead of irish.

But I thought that could just be assumed, I didn't realize I had to spell it out.

Indeed - all valid points. I guess I'll just have to start thinking before posting instead.

But thinking is HARD!

One could [goats.com], but perhaps not two [goats.com].

So put that pint glass down. (yes, I know you are drinking Scotch)

your examples would be more compelling were they from ..say...today or yesterday when I fixed the problem, instead of last week.

I will continue to enjoy my alcohol....and spuriously claim that you now owe me a beer.

see, I had assumed that since this was posted as an explanation of why some were unable to start discussions yesterday evening, would have been sufficient to explain when that was.

I apologize for my lack of pedanticism.

I made some changes yesterday around 3.30-ish in the afternoon. Eastern time.

Also, while adding an extra <BR> to the end of a post is enough to make it "different", it may also get it modded down as redundant.
