Dagnabbit, where's my Patent Pending?
posted Friday, February 07, 2003 - 09:58 AM (#3918)
We're now a week into February, and have passed the first Thursday, and no new strip. I'm anxious and frightened and confused.

Please hold me. It's so cold...

Jeez, I never said that it would be coming at the beginning of February. Stop yer whining.

This weekend I have to draw a Goats Sunday, Monday's strip, and a guest strip for another comic. Next week I have to get a bit ahead of schedule, since I ate through all my slack time on the honeymoon. Then there's ubercon, which destroys the weekend for me.

I'm also working on other Goats-related projects that have been sitting around waiting for some attention from me.

When I can find 12 straight hours to work on a new PP, I'll do it, but until then, please cut me some slack.

In Response to jon (#3919):

Sorry, I'm cranky today. What I want more than anything is to be able to work on this stuff full-time. I want to do weekly Patent Pendings. I want to bring Goats back to five days a week. I want to work on the Crab City series I've been thinking about. I want to set up my super-secret comics project under a pseudonym. But since I can't seem to figure out a way to make a living at it after almost 6 years, I just don't have the time I'd like to spend on all these projects.

It's difficult fitting everything into the few spare hours I have after I get home from work, and it's not fair to my wife that I don't spend as much time with her as she deserves.

So sometimes things get delayed, and trust me, it bothers me more than it bothers you. But I'll keep at it anyway, for reasons unknown even to myself.

If she's worth being married to (and I think you've already decided she is... :-), it is impossible to actually spend as much time with her as she deserves.

Plus, she probably doesn't want to spend that much time with you. She does still have her own life, after all.

Plus, she must have known you were a web comic artist when she said "I do" (or the Hebrew equivalent if appropriate).

Ask yourself if she would rather that you found ways to spend time with her, or found ways to be happy when you did spend time with her.

But you're still "on the honeymoon" at this point anyway.

Mind you, I'm not unbiased here. <wahh>I want my Patent Pending!</wahh>

Sorry Jon. I should be have been more sensitive to your time constraints, etc. It's just that I have really been enjoying PP, and can't wait to see what's going to happen next. Anyway, keep up the good work (when you can) and I'll get off your back now. Still bestest buddies?

Soon, I hope. I'm about halfway finished with the next one; just trying to find a few free evenings to finish it up.

Potentially, I could do it this weekend, but I'd have to postpone the sunday strip a week. Or stop drinking so much.

Almost June? June is nearly over!

Jon, did you completely give up on the idea of Patent Pending when you took it off MT, then just place it on premium to boost the preemie-extras list?

Nope -- that would have been easier.

The next one is pencilled and inked; I still need to color and letter.

Finding the time to juggle all the stuff we need to do to keep the site up and running is getting more and more difficult, unfortunately. It will appear at some point; I just have no idea when I'm going to find 6 free hours.

If you'll put up the cash to cover my pay for the day, I'll take off to do it. As a tempslave, I don't get holiday or sick pay, unfortunately. Or health insurance. Or bonuses, or pay raises. Or 401(k).

Why am I still here?

I could give you a day's pay of mine. Which is nothing. Perhaps it's not such a tempting offer. I could offer you your own Carribean island of your choosing. But then I'd be lying and there'd be the acrimony and the hired goons around to collect. Actually, I don't have 6 months to convalesce from two broken legs. So the offer of the island doesn't stand. Much like me, if I had two shattered kneecaps.
