Sweet! The screensaver has been entertaining us for quite some time now. I love the way the sky changes in sync with the time. And the music is freakin' addictive.

Actually, candles are placed from right to left, so the flame should have been on the rightmost arm, not the leftmost. Although I suppose you could be looking at the menorah from the other side. Of course, if that were the case, then you'd see the back of the menorah's head, not the front of it. Plus, menorahs don't have heads and wriggling arms. But I guess that goes without saying.

The candles are lighted left to right, though, so the most recently-added candle is always the first one lit (after the shammos, the main candle that is usually in the middle).

Incidentally, the shammos is there only as a tool -- technically, the candles representing the miracle should have a spiritual use only, so if they were used as a source of light (i.e. to read or eat by as they very well might have been in the old days), then it would take away from their holy/spiritual nature. So, the shammos serves as the "utility" candle -- both for lighting the other candles and as a light source.

Also, many rabbis and other religious scholars have asked the question: if the miracle of Hannukah was that the oil lasted for eight days instead of just one, shouldn't you light only seven candles since only seven of the eight days were miraculous? My favorite answer to this is that the eighth is really for the miracle of light itself, and a reminder of creation, when light was created out of nothing.

Tonight's the last night; I wish a Happy Hannukah to all the other Jewish members of the board (Yeah, yeah. Big deal). Happy Boxing Day to all you freaks who celebrate that godforsaken holiday (What exactly happens on boxing day? Do you all like, box each other or something?). And to all you unreformed Christians out there: hope Xmas was swell.

I think it was traditional on Boxing Day for the servants and upper class English folks to swap roles for the day (or part thereof) in 18th/19th century England. There was probably some boxing done too.

In Ireland, we call it "Stephen's Day", after some saint or other. I think his name was Stephen.

That is the weirdest screensaver. I really like it, but it's put me in a rather odd mood. Maybe it was the music. Maybe it was the rubberband effect of pulling the baloon monster and making the little monster fly through the air. It could have been the little eyes nervously following my mouse.. I'm not sure. But I feel like curling up in a ball and listening to the Cure.
