He Was The Man In Black

Friday, September 12, 2003 - 07:43 AM

We loved Johnny Cash. "Ring of Fire" plays nightly on the jukebox at the pub, and since I discovered his music there almost seven years ago, I have been enjoying his entire body of work, a career spanning decades that gave life to some of the most memorable songs ever. Even his latest works, which were depressing as hell, were absolutley brilliant.

You may have noticed our affection for the Man in Black. Johnny Cash is routinely played on Goats roadtrips, and when his voice is heard on the jukebox, almost always inspires a round of drinking or singing or both. We have even dreamed about having Mr. Cash perform the voice of Toothgnip in imaginary animated Goats projects.

So it is with great sadness that I say goodbye to Johnny Cash, who died early this morning at the age of 71. Thank you, John, and say hi to June for us.

It's kinda dignified that he dies shortly after his wife.

I think he had a good life and very full life, producing quality art from long ago to recently. The world is a less talented place now without him.

It's time to give some old Cash a spin I think.

In honor of Johnny, I'd like to ask everyone to change their signature to a quote from one of his songs for a period of one week.

Let us all hope he's not spinnin' around a different ring of fire.

I think we all owe it to him to go to the bars tonite and take over the jukeboxes until every Cash song is played. And if you find this suggestion obnoxious... well, you should drink more and then reconsider. ;)

Possibly so, for the musically unenlightened. But what could be a more fitting tribute than bars and pool halls across the country playing Cash while raising a whiskey? I surely can't think of one...

I'm sadly disappointed with your "Republicans for Voldemort" shirts. Where are the "Democrats for Cornelius Fudge" shirts?

On a slightly creapy coincidence, i was rummaging around in my basement when i came upon some records my parents still had (the player long gone) and lo and behold there is the Johnny Cash collection. 7 records of the man in black right in front of me.

Then i came upstairs to read goats later that night and saw the news... i think his angel was pointing me in the right direction... oooooh

It seems quite odd that the first place I heard about his passing was on this very thread, and merely hours after the news was released. I knew before my father, and he's been a big fan for decades. Goats appears to be my best source of news at the moment.

Unfortunately, Goats does not have the same dedication to Australian country music, either choosing not to release or not knowing about the fact that Slim Dusty also recently passed away.

May the pub always have a beer or two up there for ya, Slim.

Well, the David Gordon Kirpatrick 'Slim Dusty' guy who wrote 'A Pub with no Beer' and 'I'd Love to Have a Drink With Duncan'. Made 103 albums. Played at Tamworth a lot.

He's the realest Slim Dusty I've ever heard of.
