Goats Forums 2.0

Monday, June 16, 2003 - 09:51 AM

If you haven't checked out our forums before, now would be a great time to do so. We've (and by we, I mean Phillip) made some significant improvements to the features, and gave it a spiffy new look. Here's what you can expect:
  • Read/Unread: The forums now keep track of which posts you've already seen, and which ones are new for you. Discussions and Forums with new posts have a little red triangle to the left of 'em, and the ones you're caught up on have a gray triangle. When you're inside a discussion, new posts get flagged with a red header for easy identification.
  • Avatars and Locations: Registered users can now display an avatar next to their posts, and can also display their location.
  • Meta Info: You can now find out how long a user has been registered on the site, how many forum posts they've made, and see their user level (based on Karma).
  • Improved Viewing Options: The default mode for the forums is now Flat, to encourage more ongoing discussion. Flat view also now displays posts in the proper order, and includes handy links to the post to which the reply references. Longer flat threads can be split up into multiple pages for quicker loading; you can even set how many comments appear per page. Threaded view is still available, and is still super-funky.
  • More Prettiness: Smooth yet nefarious buttons make it easier to reply, start new discussions, and check out your fellow forumites.
  • More Sporkle: There is now more Sporkle in the forums.
I think that covers just about everything. Questions? Comments? Let us know below.

I couldn't help but make a quick stop in to check out the new forums. They look great! Just on a quick look around though, I noticed one issue with the MetaModerate page. Under the comment that is to be metamoderated - where you make your selections, check the context, etc., the background is now black, however the text that is not a link is also black, causing the reader to have to highlight the text to still read it. The first comment however, had a white background, it was just the remaining comments that were black. Otherwise, I love the changes so far! Great work Guys (and by guys, I mean phillip).

Rich, what browser, version and OS are you using? Everything looks fine to me on my machine, so it's likely browser-specific.

Also, if you can let me know what your screen resolution is and whether you're viewing in flat, threaded or nested mode, that would help greatly.

Anyone else who spots a display bug, if you could also include that information, that would be helpful and you will be my special friend.

It looks like there are still some issues with line wrapping of the message content when using threaded view. If I keep my screen at a reasonable width, I can see a partial amount of Rich's message (and I'm betting most people can't see all of this one at all.). As I make my screen wider, the amount I can see gets larger.

It seems to work reasonably well in preview mode, though.

I'm seeing the same thing on IE 6 on Windows NT. Or at least, I'm seeing something.

What I'm seeing is the right hand edge of the message box is chopped flat. It seems to be some sort of frame clipping, because it's a constant line across all messages.

I'm viewing in nested mode, and my screen resolution is 1280x1024.

whoah...ok, i see it now

It only occurs in nested view (IE6,WinXP, 1280x1024...window resized).

To my html-savy eyes, it appears the indented nested messages are bigger than the master cell they are in, and so get cropped by the cell for the sidebar (the one w/ Diablo at the podium).

it's a IE-only CSS bug; it screws up width caculations when you mix tables and DIVs. I have it fixed (along with some other fixes) on our dev server; and eevrything will hopefully be normal once Phillip uploads the fixes to the live servers.

Can you be more specific about the error? The text of the error would be handy.

Also, make sure that your avatar isn't any bigger than 100px square, and (I believe ) 30k in size.

Also, did you enter a full URL with the http:// prefix?

On first attempt for me, I got an "unrecognized file format" error for a GIF that's 98x100 and 4k. This was highlighted in red on the preferences page.

All subsequent attempts to set an avatar just went to a white page with black, generic text saying that an error was encountered, and it'd be fixed after everybodyy got back from the pub.

Other than that and the side of nested comments being cut off in IE, I really like the new forums. Somebody give Phillip a beer for me.

Well...initially my image was 50x60 and less than 30k. I had changed it to 70x90 to match yours, and was still getting the error. Yes, I enter the fully qualified URL correctly. The error message I was getting was the same one already mentioned (...when we get back from the pub). I just tried again in order to get the exact wording, and strangely, it worked....I didn't do anything different so I assume either you or phillip fixed something.

the Image::Info [cpan.org] module uses IO::String internally, but must "require" it intead of "use" it, so there's no error generated until you try it.

It's fixed.

Jon,
I'm running Win98 SP2, IE 5.5, 800x600, nested mode. (You want to do an auction so I can do a major upgrade?)
It looks like the red line at the top of the page under the word 'forums' is the width of the viewable forum area. I noticed in Ver. 1.0 some of the longer nested items had the right line of the message box missing but thought nothing of it until now. Those messages were still readable.
