New Art Auction: SPUMMY!

Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 04:01 PM

I want to thank everyone that bid on the Geek Patrol sketch auction (and especially Zamphir, who had the winning bid); I managed to raise a few dollars towards my new computer. Remember, your bids on these auctions are very definitely helping me in a real and tangible way. Only a few thousand more auctions and I should be cruising behind the wheel of a brand new 3.06Ghz Pentium 4.

The next auction is for a one-of-a-kind sketch of SPUMMY (a.k.a. Space Mummy). This hand-drawn original sketch was drawn by Yours Truly at the 2002 San Diego Comic-Con under the influence of several substances and in the vicinity of Jeff Rowland, Sam Brown, John Allison, and R Stevens (who, incidentally, originally created the character of Spummy, who in turn has found his way into the hearts of cartoonists everywhere -- if you're wondering who Spummy is, check out this comics jam we all did last year). It's Pigma Micron marker and blue non-repro pencil on Bristol Board, 9"x12".

This is a quick auction; it's only going for three days, and will end this Friday, March 21st, at 4:00pm EST (1:00pm PST), so be sure to bid early and often.

UPDATE: The auction has ended. Everyone wins!

There is more Space Mumy goodness starting here [wigu.com] at the venerable comical strip "WiGU".

Hey, any change of Spummy making it onto some merchandise? Like a Spummy mug, or t shirt, or a Spummy cod piece? That picture is great, and it seems kind of wasteful for just one person to be able to appreciate all that Spummy goodness.

The short answer to this is "not anytime soon".

The long answer is "perhaps", with lots of boring explanation attached.

No, it's just not worth getting into the complexities right now. We have other merch plans that have no baggage attached.

Oh? Spin-off animated mini-series on UPN involving the writing talents of five of our favorite demented comic strippers, then?
  ...
(Actually, something like this isn't technically outside the realm of possibility. Starship Irregulars(an icebox.com web cartoon) got pretty far into the TV-dev process with Showtime before it fell apart, which is a pity, because it was kinda clever.)

(that was a very long parenthetical statement. And it had a nest, too! Time to sleep.)

Looks like there's more to Spummy's story than we've been told!
