Strip Search

Wednesday, March 05, 2003 - 09:46 AM

After nearly two years of work, we finally have our search feature live on the site. You can use it to search the news, the forums, and even the text of the entire comics archive. Our Comics Search interface displays the lines of dialogue and other indexed items that match your search so you can find that one comic you've been looking for but can't, for the life of you, remember where it is in the archive. News and Forums results also display the relevant snippets of text that your search matched in a handy-dandy DHTML gizmo (in newer browsers, anyway -- older ones just see a plain-old title attribute) that appears when you mouseover the result links.

You can find the search forms on the homepage above the news, on the archive pages above the series guide, and in the footer of every page. We'll be sprinking links to the form liberally about the site as the need arises, as well.

This wasn't just the result of our efforts; this project would never have been accomplished if not for the help of a handful of dedicated readers who entered and double-checked every single line of dialogue, every single prop, and every single sound effect from the 1300+ comic strips in our archive. Mad props (haha) go to Chad, jgarcia, luvrhino, Rich, Oedipa_Maas, mjfgates, misere, punkalicia, unFalln, Menippus, albionsoft, zamphir, and dha. Thank you, guys, for all your hard work. And we'd especially like to thank Simon Larsen (aka tor), our resident jedi who brainstormed the idea for this project, who designed and constructed the intitial database and administrative tools, entered the data for literally hundreds of strips, connived other people into helping him, and then helped us get it up and running on the site. Thank you so much, Simon, and if there's anyone you need killed, let us know.

If I missed anyone in the list of people who helped above, please let me know -- we only have proper stats for strip entry from after we moved everything over to our database, and I want to make sure everyone gets proper credit.

And here I thought I was going to get naked!

Seriously though, Great feature. I tested for myself, and was all giddy when I got my search results. Thanks all of you. This has got to be one of the best site additions/changes since premium.

I'm curious, has anyone turned up any interesting results with the search? I've been poking around and been doing various comparisons between the frequency of word occurrence in the strip. What have you found?

In Response to jon (#4302):

I sent some comments to Phillip on this topic recently.

I don't have my exact figures handy, and don't feel like bothering to recreate them, but as best I recall:
Jon is more popular than Phillip (by about 10 hits)
Phillip is more popular than beer
Beer is more popular than Toothgnip
Toothgnip is more popular than Diablo.

And I found that the search on the forums only returns hits for mention inside a message, and not on contents of author names (so searching for Zamphir does not return one hit for each post I've made, just one hit for each post that mentions me).

jon, masterbate(s,ion) does not appear in a search of any of the topics, and while this is not an issue of a reference being there and not identified, but a general wonderment of why there's no reference to hit.

As for Z's comment on searching his name:

1. It could be deemed helpful/necessary for computer illiterates to hit each post he's made through a search of his name.

2. (aka - the other hand) That information is already easily accesible by the nice link marked zamphir's info [goats.com] (or other registered user) on each post made by said registered user.

I'm not trying to say that it's *wrong* that it works the way it does. I'm just 'splainen how I've found it to work.

In Response to jon (#4302):

jon gave up smoking April 24 1997.

in 97 2 ashtrays were drawn
98 3 ashtrays
99 7 ashtrays
00 1 ashtray
01 - 03 none....

(assuming that the data entry is correct (which I know in this case it is not) and the ashtrays are all in there).

I posit that a person giving up smoking will be haunted and tempted and teased by the demon smoke for the following months (many people say about 6 - 8 months)..

The evidence shows that jon lied in 1997 when he claimed to have quit smoking! obviously he quit late 98 / early 99!!! He couldn't stop drawing the secret desire!!!

The man has lied to us in comic form!

and, if that wasn't disturbing enough, he has used tobacco as a scapegoat drug!!!!

In 97 smoking crack was mentioned for the first time, once. In 1998 jon explicitly mentions crack and it's use 6 times!!!! ALL IN EARLY 1998!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have proof that jon quit smoking "tobacco" in late 1998 and proof that early 1998 he was constantly thinking of his sweet sweet demon bride crack cocaine (any coincidence that the phrase "demon bride" is only ever referred to late 1997? at just the time jon was experimenting with his, soon to be, overriding thought in life?).

My friends, jon is an evil ex crack addict blaming tobacco (that smooth carolina smoke) for his behaviour!

Now I bet jon didn't think this would come out. Phillip on the other hand must have known and wanted the truth to out itself, that's why he encouraged me to continue with this project! That's why jon did very little data entry in the early days of the project! and that is why America is falling apart at the seams!

thank you.

(I'm sure it goes without saying that Amy is more popular than Megan in Jon's house.)

Diablo may actually be more popular than Jon in the forums (that stinky chicken).

Alas, because I have already posted in this forum, I'll have to search for some obscure post in an untouched forum to add your points to. But wait, what's this... Actually, I started smoking again about 6 months after that strip. I finally quit for good (excluding the two cigs I've smoked since then for no good reason) about two years ago, when someone very nice reminded me that they'd like to live with me for as long as possible.
