Comixpedia

Not too long ago, Modern Tales publisher Joey Manley challenged the webcomics community to come up with an independent vehicle to report on the nascent online comics industry. The response to that challenge is Comixpedia So far, Comixpedia looks promising (despite their very sad decision to represent all of webcomics with a potato icon on their homepage). They've started out with some typical articles, such as the one on the business of webcomics, which focuses on the usual suspects and gives a good overview for people not already familiar with the issues. The first issue also features a handful of interviews and reviews.

Hopefully the editors of Comixpedia will take it upon themselves to create controversy, shun mediocrity, and point out hidden gems to us when they find them. I'll be watching.

Thanks for pointing out Comixpedia -- this is a Good Thing to have in the world. However, I don't see the potato icon that disappoints you so much -- the only similar thing I can see, with a strech of imagination, is Bun-Bun, a rabbit character from Sluggy Freelance (http://www.sluggy.com). (He is never drawn to resemble an actual rabbit - the way teddy bears don't resemble real bears - and he does kinda look like a potato even at his best, when he's not holding a switchblade. In the Comixpedia icon, he's facing right, with his tail to the left.)

It is kinda disappointing for them to have chosen one minor (if well-loved) character from one strip to be the icon for all the webcomics articles, but it's not so bad as if they'd chosen a potato. (Unless, for some reason, you deeply dislike Sluggy.)

Glad to see you back. (It's proof! weddings can be survived!)

Terrific article. I am surprised that it did not go deeper into various revenue models. I am really looking forward to our upcoming panel at Ubercon, because I want to hear how Premium and Super Premium subscriptions have worked out, and how Modern Tales has gone after one year.

I'll have other revenue streams to talk about, too...like this card game we're demoing ("I play the potato card on you!") and those Halloween costumes you helped me sell. Plus I've got actual syndication fees coming in from newspapers.

The guy is absolutely right that trying to make money at your creative endeavor is no crime, as long as you hold on to your own understanding of integrity. So if they're naming the most successful sell-outs in 2005, I hope Goats and PartiallyClips are the first ones to leap to mind.

Yeah, I didn't see a potato-like thing anywhere either. My guess is the mouse in the word-bubble they have. I won't defend the drawing, but I just don't see 'potato.'

Yeah.

They really should have picked Evil Cheese.

Cheese (even evil cheese) is always better than potatoes.

How do I know that? That's easy. If you add cheese to potatos, the potatoes get better. If you add potatos to cheese, the cheese gets worse. Simple.

“Oh” indeed.

See, kids, this is why they tell you to “think before you post.” If I’d been paying better attention all along, I would have seen this for the fun-poking it was, instead of wondering how in the world Jon failed to recognize the potato in question. But now I know better.

My apologies for that entire section of my original post!

If they weren't going to use Goats characters then they should've used One or Two [zole.org].

No... if you add cheese to potatoes, the potatoes suffer severe gastro-intestinal problems due to their lactose intolerance.

Not if it's soy cheese [goats.com].

And, you may say 'potatoe', but the rest of us say 'topato'. However, tamahtas go better with cheese too.
