The Way Of The World

Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 11:44 AM

Our very own Colin, occasional site contributor, playwright and the best damn Oedipus I've ever been privileged to witness, has placed a piece of short fiction for your enjoyment on the world wide internet at beekiller.net. If you dig lawn maintenance and socialism as much as I do, you'll enjoy this sweet treasure.

What? You all spill over one another to send me jokes that only a fourth-grader with ADD would find funny and NOBODY can comment on my story?

*sheesh*

Goat-lovers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your...uh, yeah, um, mumble-mumble...

In Response to Colin (#3649):

The ground was loamy and rich with rain and run-off; it sucked at your feet when you walked, splattered you, sneaked up your pant leg, found its way underneath your fingernails and in-between your toes.

I think you should have used 'snuck'.

"Sneaked" is proper grammar. "Snuck" is either just ignorance (not knowing, not the bad connotation most people give the word), apathy, laziness, or just utter retardation.

Proper grammar where? What are your sources?

From its earliest appearance in print in the late 19th century as a dialectal and probably uneducated form, the past and past participle snuck has risen to the status of standard and to approximate equality with sneaked. [m-w.com]

And it would have been more proper of you to reply to my message, instead of Colin's.

As usual, the truth lies somewhere between the two. The OED acknowledges the existence of "snuck", but describes it as "chiefly U.S. pa. tense and pple. of SNEAK v." -- so, in other words, it is not thoroughly unacceptable, but there's a definite suggestion that "sneaked" is preferable.

Eh. It's no William Congreve, but it's not bad.

More proper? it's either proper or it isn't.

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
