Everyone Loves A Benefit Concert

Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 09:11 AM

Just a quick message from my wife Amy:

I have been working to help re-establish a scholarship fund at Cornell University, our alma mater, in honor of Maribel Garcia, a friend who died tragically in a car accident only a few years after graduation.

Maribel was touring with the incredibly talented singer-songwriter Sam Shaber, also a Cornell grad.

For any of you who might be in the Cornell/Ithaca area next Thursday, Sam is headlining a benefit concert on campus. There will also be a performance by Cornell student Candace Berne and a reading of some of Maribel's writing by another Cornell alum (Maribel was a wonderful short story writer).

The Maribel Garcia Community Spirit Award will be given each year to a Cornell student who has made a remarkably insightful, selfless, and/or creative contribution to their community.

Here's more about Maribel Garcia, the fund and how you can donate.

I really wish I could be there for the concert, but sadly, I can't reschedule my cousin's bat mitzvah.

Is it wrong for me to giggle that the first recipient of the award is named Ding Kong?
