Volume III Hardcovers On The Way

Thursday, August 15, 2002 - 10:07 AM

Just wanted to let you patient people who have ordered the Evil Chickens Don't Kiss Limited Edition Hardcovers that your patience has not been in vain. The books have arrived; Phillip and I and a twelve-pack of Saranac are going to sit down and sign and number all the books this upcoming Sunday. They'll be sent off (probably) the next day via Priority Mail, so you should have them by the end of next week. International folks' deliveries may take slightly longer, of course.

If you're interested in placing an order for one of these sweet babies, it's not too late (although we can no longer guarantee you the same number as your previous volume). The remaining books will be sold first come, first served, so order yours today.

Paperback books will be announced shortly -- very shortly. Don't blink.

How did you know when it was time to start trying to sell stuff to people? I feel like I'm starting to get close to that point, but I don't know where to begin. Any advice?

A small, superintelligent poodle told me.

He said, "Now is the time, Jon. Now is the time."

And then, he flew away.

I sure do miss that poodle.

On the serious side, I can see a sizable body of work, an established, consistent artistic style (reason John A gives for not doing a Bobbins equivalent) and an indefatigable entrepreneurial spirit as contributing factors.

You know, "indefatigable" seems to be a word that only exists in written form. Ever hear anyone actually say it?

Primarily, you guess.

Luckily, you can break that guess up into lots of smaller guesses, so you have even more chances to be wrong, and then you hope that some of them cancel each other out.

The basic factors you need to think about are how many copies do you think you can sell, what does it cost to get that many copies of whatever you're thinking of printed, how much do you think you can sell each of those for, etc...its not rocket science, but it does entail having several beers while you ponder each question.

Is it possible to properly ponder a question without involving several beers?

Turns out all the poodle wanted was to be fed, but you ignored it's repeated attempts to remind you that it was the time for dinner, and instead embarked on a project to produce and sell Goats stuff. I mean, I think I speak for everyone here when I say we're glad you did, but no wonder the poor thing flew away.

This, of course, can lead to some problems when someone asks "How many beers have you had, anyway?" It's almost like quantum mechanics at that point...
