Goats: The Forums

Tuesday, July 09, 2002 - 01:25 PM

I just did a quick search through past emails. The earliest reference of interest in having a forums system on the Goats site that I could find was from 12/21/1999. Jon was suggesting a specific software package for us to use for the Goats Forums. We didn't use it for two reasons:
  1. I had heard that specific package was a piece of crap.
  2. I was too busy fixing the Y2K bugs I had written into the system in 1997 when I didn't expect to still be doing this in a month, never mind 5 years.
It's July of 2002. 31 months after that email, and they're finally here. Now, who's the slacker?

We've actually been meaning to get the forums into place pretty much since that original email. However, silly things like day jobs, and school kept getting in the way. We had things we wanted the forums to be able to do. We wanted threading, we wanted not-threading, we wanted it to be a piece of software we would have the freedom to modify, we wanted to try and keep things on the same platforms and technologies we were using, and we wanted them to not suck.

The site is one of the most over-engineered comic strip sites out there. This is because I'm a geek. I like designing systems, and if that means jon has to wait a few extra years for something that doesn't make me cringe, then I come up with excuses (mostly having to do with Weihenstephaner), and take the time to do things the way I like. This means we're always a bit behind the curve, but when we do finally have something, it's more scaleable, flexible, and (although none of you can see it) the underlying designs are much purtier than they would be otherwise.

For those who care, The base that all that is built on is a few Linux servers (from the now-defunct hardware division of VA Linux). One runs the MySQL database, and the two redundant web servers run HTML::Mason on mod_perl-enabled Apache web servers.

No one had built a heavy duty forums type system for Mason, but a few existed that were written in Perl. Of those, one of the most heavily exercised is Slash, the code that runs ever-popular, Slashdot. However, Slash uses Template Toolkit for its templating, and we use Mason. Additionally, Slash has all sorts of features for user submission, story display, sections, and other stuff that we don't currently need.

So I rewrote it.

Not all of it, there's some large chunks that are very similar and obviously a lot of other chunks which got left behind. As a basis for logic, however, it was a pretty good chunk of code. Some of the really good things we inherited from them are:

  • The moderation system:
we can try to keep the forums on track without having to censor anyone, and all of you get to be the enforcers (Allowing jon and myself to stick to what we're good at: being lazy).

  • A lot of the screening of HTML-in-posts:
I like letting people decorate text, especially for emphasis purposes. However, I know that many people have the same feelings about closing tags as I have about closing times.

  • Threading:
Or Not. Your call; there's multiple options for how to display discussions. I can't tell you how happy I was to not have to figure out this logic on my own.

Along with the forums comes a whole new user options area as well, to let you modify your settings for use in the forums. You'll have to watch your karma in there, and only post in existing Discussions until it gets above 3. We want to encourage our regular readers and active participants to use the Forums, so we let newbies participate, but they need to prove themselves a little before posting at the top level. Non-registered posters (and registered posters who are nervous of the wrath of moderators) can also participate anonymously as Lonely Goatherds, our version of the Anonymous Coward of Slashdot fame.

Last, but not at all least, we'd like to thank the beta testers who participated and gave us feedback. You'll know who they are, since they'll be starting the initial discussions for us. They did a great job, and cleaned up a massive number of my screw-ups. Any additional screw-ups you find are purely because I presented them with an immovable object.

So let us know what you think. We have features we're already thinking of adding, but we also have a couple of other projects we want to get done, so any feedback helps us prioritize.

Enjoy!

Hmm.

Am I supposed to say something like 'First Post' here?

Seriously, looks very good. Any thought of adding a karma-hinged way to make new Forums as well as discussions within one? I can certainly see the forums getting a little overcrowded to find interesting ones.

This is certainly possible, but I don't think we'll need it. I've been looking at forums for other webcomics, and most of them make do with a single forum.

The way that the discussions get sorted is by activity -- discussions with the most recent posts stay at the top of the list, while inactive ones drift towards the bottom. That way, you're likely to be able to find the ones that people are finding most interesting at the moment.

Remember, each forum can hold hundreds of discussions (40 per page), and each discussion can have hundreds of posts distributed amongst dozens of threads. It's pretty flexible like that.

While I dig the idea of people not being able to post new topics until having accumulated enough karma, I'm thinking it might be wise to waive this restriction for a few days. At least until the forum actually takes off a bit, as the place won't really start jumping until a fair number of people can start threads...

What's with this scoring system?

Are you actually reading each of our posts and scoring them? Or, is the forum somehow looking for words that are 'Intriguing.'

If the latter is true, then it explains how I got a 2 in the PP forum thanks to my use of 'goats' and 'porn' in the same sentence.

yeah, it says it in the FAQ. Its basically whoever is a moderator at the time gives points to your post, if its aa + number, then you get that many karma, if it a - number, then you get - that number karma. At least thats what I gathered.

As I understand, it basically works like Slashdot. Which is to say, your post starts with a score of 1, and moderators add or subtract from the score ("mod" the post "up" or "down"). A moderator could be any user who has accumulated karma, and you get karma by having your posts modded up.

Jon and I have uber-moderator status. (Although we still can't moderate our own posts.) Until the pool of people with sufficient karma to participate has grown larger, we're making an effort to go through and do the moderation ourselves .

Additionally, it helps increase the karma of the early participants, and sets an example of what we're looking for in moderation when points start getting more distributed.

But, I am curious, what's up with the "informative", "funny", "redundant", etc. tags? Do they add flavor to the karma, or are they just there to help those who're scanning for interesting posts to read?

Also, are there any posting guidelines? There was a link on the "forum options" page, but it just took me back to the choose-a-forum page.

There is, actually, meta-moderation, which appears daily on the main forums pages when you've accumulated some karma. Basically, it lets you say whether a particular moderation is fair or unfair.

It's not all that necessary, since the moderators are chosen from the folks who have been themselves modded up -- the community has already designated these people as folks who know what a good post consists of.

The tags are to give the moderators guidelines as to what to look for -- we don't want people modding up comments just because they agree or disagree with them, or just because they like or dislike the poster. You have to justify your moderation.

As far as posting guidelines go, I want to keep that to a minimum. I'd like people to feel free to discuss what they want to. Keep in mind that people are going to be moderating your comments, though, so if you're looking to get more Karma, you'll want to post funny comments, insightful comments, intriguing comments, etc. and keep the flames, trolling and such to a minimum. Basically, start your new discussions in the appropriate forum, and don't be too much of an ass. I think that should cover it.

If you're interested, there's more info in a post I put up the other day [goats.com].
