Newspapers Beware

Monday, September 04, 2006 - 10:24 PM

Good buddy R Stevens announced on his site today that he's signed on with United Feature Syndicate; Diesel Sweeties should start showing up in your local paper around the start of next year. This is good news, it is about time that the old guard sat up and took notice of what is going on in the tubes of the internets.

Even better news is that Mr. Stevens has managed to hold on to a lot of the rights over his material, enabling him to continue to put the strips on his own website and keep things pretty much as they are now for the folks that prefer not to have to read their comics in the paper. The web is enabling artists to manage their own careers instead of having terms dictated to them; this is not a small thing and I think that the power shift we're seeing here is a herald of things to come.

Make sure you go and read the details. Rich deserves kudos and mazel tovs all around.

Wow, that's your promised land? You must really be in the suck...

Maybe Wisconsin. If you just have to have the frozen north, why not try beautiful Vermont? Then you can have hippies with your snow.

if you can't spell the name of the state correctly, you might want to stick with MN. and i concur with the previous comments. Minnesota blows in the same - but opposite - way that miami does.

I was very interested in the details of how R managed to keep the terms in his favor. It sounds like he has a lot of comic-drawing ahead of him in order to meet the demands of UFS and the much tougher demands of his web audience.

Will rstevens have to tone down slash alter his content for the old school media? Or does he get to put it in as-is?

Or is he doing a new strip for them?

I know there have been some changes to format, as far as content goes I am not sure but I would be surprised if there were not some limitations. You'd have to ask Rich about the specifics.

The good news is that if there is a strip that he wants to write that the syndicate editors do not approve then he can just go ahead and post it to the website anyhow. That's probably something new in the world, I would think.

Format changes? Will he be going one-block like The Far Side, or the sacred tetris 4-piece?

It'll be interesting seeing how he handles recoloring for greyscale readability on the dailys, though. Or how oversized pixels look in newsprint for that matter.

You just stick to the Mirror and Andy Capp, and you'll be just fine. Remember, he might be a work-shy misogynist, but at least his spelling is up to scratch.

Additionally, I think you’ll find Liz gets really pissed at people who don’t correctly capitalise the country’s name. I guess you’re not too proud of your heritage and wish to emigrate. Off you go. Please. Just don't forget that you still need Mummy or Daddy to sign the passport application.

While I can't speak for Nagy, I'd say that spelling and grammar mistakes sometimes occasion high levels of snark around these parts. Don't take it personallyf or let it turn you off.

Yes, and people don't like it when you don't live up to your word. Personally, I think your 0, Incoherent mod was punishment enough, for some reason Nagy has taken a strong disliking for you.

I'm somewhat blessed. For some reason, I have always been very careful about grammar and spelling. I even use punctuation in text messages, for pete's sake, even apostrophes. So I was never criticized here on the forums for writing in an undignified manner.

I certainly have been taken to task for the *ideas* in that writing, however.

I'm evidence enough that people can be accepted into the forums, so I definitely encourage you to wise up and stick around. Hey, you may even win a t-shirt!

All my love,
Deathalicious
