Weekend Reading Assignment

Friday, June 28, 2002 - 02:55 PM

In approximately two hours, I will be escaping from the prison I call my day-job, and will be running off to other nearby states to cavort, play pool, imbibe, picnic, and listen to Garrison Keillor.

Those of you who aren't as lucky and will not be able to escape the drudgery of your everyday lives need not despair -- there are fun thing to do on the World Wide Internet. Some of those things are On-Line Comical Strips.

  • Achewood
I'm sure you've already come across this strip, as it's been reccommended by just about everyone I know, but it's worth mentioning again. It took me a couple of visits to the site before I "got it", but that may just be due to my extra-special denseness. I suggest you start from the beginning, and don't stop until you've made it to the end. Let the magic do its work. This one is now on my very short list of daily stops.

  • Cat and Girl
Some of you may have come across Dorthy Gambrell's The New Adventures of Death whilst perusing the Modern Tales site of which I am a participating artist-type. What you may not know is that Death is actually a spin-off of Gambrell's long-running Cat And Girl, which is about, as you may guess, a Cat and a Girl. WARNING: This comic strip is brilliant. I know people go throwing that word around a lot, but it applies here. If you're just coming back from seeing Mr. Deeds this weekend, I suggest you avoid the strip. Your brain will crack like a hot cup of tea put in a freezer.
Now go pre-order my book, damn you.

I just wanted to thank Jon for pointing me in the direction of these two wonderful comics. I think Cat and Girl has forever changed the way I will view the world.

Bonus: Now I know what a cat in a thong looks like. Finally...

I'd like to throw out the name of another comic that I enjoy.

http://www.redmeat.com

While not actually an on-line comic, per se (It is published in at least one news paper that i know of), It is amusing, and on-line as well.

Do you think you could post more of these weekend reading assignments? I enjoy web comics and finding new pages...but it is hard to find good stuff without spending hours looking for it. I'm hoping I can tap into your wasted time. That, and if you find it worth mentioning, it will probably be worth reading.

And you can give pop quizzes for free Karma.
