Goats Website, Version Whatever

Friday, March 03, 2006 - 05:40 PM

Welcome to our new website, folks! The new Goats site is now running on our brand-new site architecture. Most of the changes are under the hood. Hopefully you won't notice anything different aside from the baby-safe furnishings.

Amongst the new features are a retooled archive with a navigation more suited to a strip that's been running for nine years. We've also added a fancy new bios section which should help newcomers understand what's been going on here a bit better. I'll be adding a story guide in the next few days to help out in that area as well.

One of the casualties of the redesign has been our Premium section. As you may have noticed, Goats has gone from a thrice-weekly black-and-white strip to something coming out four times a week, in color, and twice as big as it used to be. And while I've gotten more proficient over that time, it's taking up a lot more of my time than it used to. So I've decided to refocus myself on the main strip.

This was not an easy decision to make. The Premium subscribers are our biggest supporters, and we.... well, we love you guys. Not carnally or nothing, just a gooshy kind of platonic deal. And I don't want to screw you guys over, so from here on out we're extending your access, FOR FREE, to the premium section indefinitely, until the end of time in 2012, or until we decide to crank up the Premium offerings again to a level I feel is worth the money you so kindly pay us.

In addition to that you will be receiving your SPEY packages as soon as I complete them. The mini is my next big priority and once that's done we'll get them out to you ASAP. On this, I thank you for your patience and understanding. I want to make this the best SPEY yet, and I have the perfect t-shirt for you guys, all designed already and everything. Hang in there a bit more and we'll get you your care packages as soon as we can.

And finally, we'll be finishing up Worlds of Peril; you will not be left hanging. They're going to come at a slow rate but I promise you'll get to see the whole story. There's about ten episodes to go (give or take), and they should be balls-out action from here on in. I'm looking forward to it.

Like I said, I don't make this decision lightly. Premium was a good revenue stream for us, but I think I need to be focusing on creating the best comic strip possible, and I hope that you understand this. If you have any concerns as a premium person, or if this deal seems raw to you, email me and I will take care of you.

Anyway, I hope you like the new site. And if you don't, give it a few days. It may grow on you.

And if you don't like it after a few days, well, then screw you.

I just noticed that the Google ads are gone from all pages except for the very front of Goats.com

The only remaining ads are in two tiny boxes under the Link Buttons on the left column of the front page. It's really not a big deal whatsoever, i wouldn't really have a problem with them appearing anywhere on the site, i was just curious if the option implementation had changed, and i see now that it's of no importance. I'm enjoying the new appearance overall, i generally don't object to any change, especially since it always seems to work so reliably. Your website is way more dependable in its functionality than most places i go online.

I would still continue paying for a Premium membership even if the only benefits were a special 'exclusive' elite T-shirt and an 'exclusive' forum. It was nice to get the Sunday color comics back when the thrice-weekly was still black and white. But now that there is so much cool artwork in color Monday thru Thursday, i feel like it's all better than ever. I don't need any other benefits except maybe those token things like the members-only T-shirt each year which sort of says, "Hey, you are totally special and cool, there are only just so many hundreds of copies of this design out there, aren't you just a fashion superstar?!"

Please make sure that you've cleared your cache; stylesheets get cached in Firefox and the forums have a separate stylesheet from the main one. Likely you are seeing the old sheets.

The site has been built in and tested heavily within Firefox, I'm not anticipating many bugs for that browser. If there's an issue, it is likely yours. Safari, IE and kin are another matter.

I'll be making tweaks here and there over the next week or two, so don't fret too much if you see things that are awry.

Thank you, Phillip. I've gone to my user preferences [goats.com] and chosen to view the site without ads. I've reloaded a variety of pages, and all ads appear to be completely gone, from the front page all the way down into the bowels of the archives, store, and forums.

And this is all despite my having received your notice of Premium Subscription Cancellation. So after i receive my final SPEY this year, i won't be able to make any claims in the future about being somehow "special and elite". Well, except when i wear my Evil Cock t-shirt or some other item which was never freely available to the public at large. Then i can feel so very exclusive and even more abnormal than usual.

To pick a little nit, while the bio of Fineas is thorough and nicely done, it does leave out the beginning as Fish, which should be linked back to the original strip with him in it.
