Database Ponies

Saturday, February 18, 2006 - 12:39 PM

If you were hitting the site in the last half hour or so, you may have noticed it wasn't there. We had some database wackiness last week, and I figured it was time to finally upgrade to MySQL 4.1 from 4.0. Now that they're saying that 5.0 is the production version, I figured it was safe to upgrade to the release before it.

I'm hoping the upgrade will make the errors magically not recur, but at least if they do I have a better basis for tracking them down. I'm also hoping that the upgrade will make the site perform at superluminal speeds faster than its physical hardware will actually allow, and that it will magically generate ponies for all our readers, but we'll see. Due to the update, keep an eye out for anything more weird than usual (either here or at MegaGamerz, fleen, or even Oh No Robot)...or do what you usually do, and use this post as a referendum on all the other outstanding bugs I haven't fixed yet.

Your database had better generate food, shelter, and someone to care for the ponies too, or there's going to be a big pile of dead database ponies in front of my computer in a couple weeks.

I think it says that in the MYSQL 5 release notes.

No. It's due to a little publicised MySQL feature. Check out the product definition for ETP (equine transfer protocol) and the BarPony2Poop setting. This should explain why you didn't get a pony.

I'm not sure how you not giving me money would cause you to not get a pony from the Goats database, but if you'd like to give me money, feel free to see if that really works.

Tuesday, February 21st, 6:40pm Goats Standard Time, when i browse the front page the background is no longer black. Thus there is white text on a white page, and all is invisible (except for orange text with hyperlinks). If i select some text and highlight it, i can read it. Otherwise, it's just white on white.

...and when i check back half an hour later, everything is back to 'normal' (white text on black background) and perfectly legible. Please disregard my previous post.

I haven't noticed anything particularly unusual about the forums or the moderation tools here. But i have been seeing something trivial at the Megagamerz forums for a while, and it happened again today:

Once per day i am allowed to meta-moderate (although there are often no comments available for meta-moderation). After i meta-moderate and press the button, the next page still tells me that i am eligible to perform meta-moderation (again?). Then i press the button a second time, and it sternly tells me "You are not eligible for meta-moderation, you may return to the home page." This is very unimportant, i just thought i'd mention it, because it's slightly different than my experience here at the Goats forums, which seem to be working magnificently well.

Today when i try to meta-moderate a couple comments over at Megagamerz, it doesn't seem to work correctly. I make my selections, press the "meta-moderate" button, and it just takes me back to the same page with the same couple of comments. Repeatedly. Round and round and round. I gave up after the fourth or fifth try.

Meta-moderation has now been successful.

The previous trivial bug is back. I meta-moderated, i was told this: "Meta Moderation: 2 moderations have been meta moderated. Thanks for participating. You may wanna go back home, to the forums, or perhaps to your user page." But the "meta-moderate [megagamerz.com]" link is still available, despite my sense of conclusion. When i choose it again (which i shouldn't, but hey-- it's there, and i like to click it), i am told: "Meta Moderation: You are not currently eligible to Meta Moderate. Return to the homepage."

So the meta-moderation works, but the criteria for eligibility on any given day seems to need an extra nudge in order for my actions to be deemed "completed".

No, it's a question of when that piece of the page is rendered vs when it determines that you've already MMed. I know how to fix it, but it's a pain, and only a minor irritation, so it's a little lower on the list.
