Comixpedia Interview with Jon

Comixpedia has published an interview with Your Humble Cartoonist. You can actually see me becoming older and crankier as the interview goes on.

That was a very nice interview, informative and not minded. I'd like to say that the evolution of your art has been remarkable. I follow PA too and it seems that as people's skills improve, they graduate to slicker smoother lines and then to advanced coloring. I could only wish I could draw like that :)

Good thing the author didn't mention "Crab City" instead of the Hitler arc. While I liked it some people in the forums hated it (too be polite).

You didn't get older and crankier...I got shallower and clumsier, for mentioning the Hitler arc. *Grin*

Still, you were an excellent interviewee. Thanks again! ---Al

man, i liked the hitler storyline. That's the one that i refer all my friends to when i tell them about this comic. It's pretty brief, and a good introduction to the variety of humor and ADVENTURE that goes on here.

I liked it initially---but like Eric Burns of Websnark (see here [websnark.com]) I thought it went on a little long.

But I'm on, what, the 90th page of a particular storyline at my own comic, so _I_ should talk. INFINITE TYPEWRITERS I loved, and could have gone on LONGER as far as I'm concerned.

I must have a low tolerance for Hitler. I guess that could be a GOOD thing...

And IMO only. Your mileage can, and will, vary.---Al

OK, so, i can imagine dying if i were reading goats on a daily basis (as i am now) and all of a sudden the fineas story arc were interrupted for the light hearted pap of ghvsh. Fineas is a great character, and i am actually really digging him, as opposed to most of the characters who i just like laughing at. A lot. Oh man did you see that thing that phillip did that one time? comedy gold.

But i digress; what i was saying was that i can't stand waiting day after day for new material, i want to know where the plot is going! what's gonna happen!?!?!? Every day of my life has grown slightly longer because of the time spent waiting for new goats, and i cannot even begin to imagine how long those months would have been while waiting for the damned movie to end.

But i never had to deal with that because i'm new here. And i really like having it in the archive. So i guess for me it's kind of a win/win situation for me, although i can now imagine what it must have been like for all of you.

OK, I have a theory about the Dark Tower series reference in the writing influence answer. I suspect it was emulation for the first 4 and liberating good ideas from crap for the last 3. Right?

Every step towards meta-fiction made my brain ache for the real storytelling in books 3 and 4. :(

you're complaining about metafiction (note the absence of a hyphen) in a comic that has had its characters write their own comics.

Wikipedia notes [wikipedia.org]:
Some common metafictive devices include:
  • A novel about a person writing [goats.com] a novel.
  • A novel about a person reading [goats.com] a novel.
  • A story that addresses the specific conventions [goats.com] of story, such as title, paragraphing or plots.
  • A non-linear [goats.com] novel, which can be read in some order other than beginning to end.
  • Narrative footnotes [goats.com], which continue the story while commenting on it.
  • A novel in which the author [goats.com] is a character.
  • A story that anticipates the reader's reaction [goats.com] to the story.
  • Characters who do things because those actions are what they would expect from characters in a story [goats.com].
  • Characters who express awareness [goats.com] that they are in a work of fiction. (also known as breaking the fourth wall.)
  • A work of fiction within [megagamerz.com] a fiction.

You need to read more.

I'm not complaining about meta-fiction in general. I'm complaining about the Dark Tower's use of it specifically. The first three go on as if all of these "worlds" are real, and that's a cool story. Then, King gets smoked by a van, and suddenly the story changes.* Eddie wonders if he's suposed to start praying when they meet King in the "real world." It turned into a collosal pile of crap.

I've never had any trouble with anything in Goats. It's not like it started out all serious and then overnight just went crazy.

*I honestly have to wonder if he changed it solely to tell his millions of readers what a stoner retard the guy who hit him is.

Also, deerboy does indeed have it right. I'm not around there anymore (it's hard to miss it if you've ever been there.) I also spent a little time at Purdue; never been to Crawfordsville though.
