Infinite Typewriters #100

Tuesday, October 11, 2005 - 05:23 PM

I just uploaded Wednesday's strip, which will be the hundredth strip in the Infinite Typewriters storyline. I knew this one was going to be a long one when I started, but even I'm a bit surprised at some of the places it's gone. Now we've finally come to the third and final act, where we'll wrap up all those burning unanswered questions and come to some kind of finish (or, at least, a transition to something else). I'd say we've got about 30-50 strips left, give or take a wandering tangent or two.

Infinite Typewriters is the story I've wanted to tell since Goats began. Not that I knew what the plot was for this storyline eight and a half years ago, but it is the culmination of all the ideas I've had since we hit the soft-reset button three years ago. Pretty much everything that's happened during that time has quietly been in service to this story, establishing characters, setting up conflict, weaving together themes, cobbling together bits of all my favorite stories.

I knew in 2002 that I wouldn't be able to do a gag-a-day comic strip about a bunch of animals in a bar forever. I wanted to write something a bit meatier. I wanted to make a change that would keep things interesting for me as well as you. For a while, I pondered various concepts for a new strip, anticipating that I would want to end Goats altogether and start over. But something kept pulling me back to the characters, and I knew I couldn't let it go altogether.

So rather than end the strip, I decided to change it -- to remake Goats into the sort of strip I was interested in writing. But I didn't want to make the switch a jarring, upsetting event. I wanted to make the transition as natural and smooth as possible, so I decided to work the changes themselves into the storyline, letting the characters find their new roles at their own pace and help set the tone for what was to come. Infinite Typewriters is the culmination of those changes.

If reader response is any measure of our success, I think things have gone pretty well so far -- I've gotten more positive emails from you guys than we've gotten for any previous storyline by a wide margin. And I know I've enjoyed creating it more than anything I've done before.

But change is a scary thing, and there are always folks whose first instinct is to react badly to it. I hope I've helped cushion the blow of it as much as possible and held your hand along the way. If not, well, there's always the archives.

It's scary for me too, mind you. Lots of characters have been irrevocably changed. Roles and focus have shifted. I have no idea whether or not it will work. But at least the experiment will be an interesting one.

The story's not done yet; I have a few more tricks up my sleeve which I hope you'll enjoy. And where we go after that? Even I'm not completely certain.

Anyway, thanks to all of you Faithful Readers who have kept tuning in and giving me the support and encouragement that has made it such a joy to bust my ass for you for the last eight and a half years. I hope you enjoy the third act.

Huh. I'd wondered what the hell the purpose of all this was. I probably should go back and read through the storyline again, because at this point I barely know what's going on. My long-term memory simply doesn't stretch back easily to . . . Christ: April.

Okay, so that sounds kind of negative. And I guess in a way it is. Oh well. I'm still interested in seeing what will happen and where this will go, but I definitely need to refresh my memory so that I can remember what's happening now.

More power to you, M. Rosenberg.

On a serious and on topic note (for shame!):

The other day I was thinking about how long this story line has gone on, and what the hell was going on around here. It has been enjoyable, and seems to have developed the characters in a fitting way, and has kept me on the edge of my seat per say.

I'm sure wherever this storyline is going, it'll end up somewhere good. It always has in the past, and wherever I've had doubts, you always turn it around Jon.

And, if it sucks, I'll just have to find a new place to buy T-shirts fit enough for my inner geek.

I've really enjoyed how Goats has grown and evolved from the beginning (ok, I wasn't there until the early middle, but still)... Thanks for all your hard work! Even when I don't understand it I appreciate it.

Deep love for Infinite Typewriters. Deep and abiding love. This is the series that has changed me from a "Hey, I wonder what Goats is doing this month" reader to a "Is it updated yet? *reload* How about now? *reload* How about now?" reader.

Congrats.

Just out of curiosity, Jon, are there any plans to make a mini-book out of just this storyline once it's finished? To reiterate what's been said previously, this storyline has turned me from a weekly "check and see the past five days" reader to a daily "is it updated yet?" reader, and it's by far my favorite storyline. I know I'd buy a book-ized version of it.

There will definitely be a book, but not a mini one -- Volume 7 will contain this story plus just about everything since we went to color.

Hopefully by the end of 2006; Volume 5 is proving to be a pain in the ass, what with all the relettering required and lack of time in which to do it. Books 6 and 7 should be much quicker.

I admit that at one point, I was very wary of the direction you seemed to be heading. I was enthusiastic for the batshit-insane option you offered in a poll [goats.com] back on April 22. But as the weeks wore on, and particularly as comic Jon and comic Phillip were nowhere to be seen, I began to have my doubts.

However, in recent weeks, I have come full circle. This really is the best storyline you have put together, Jon. The strip is headed in the right direction. Lead on, chief lemming.

Yeah, it's been a blast, but then I wholeheartedly meant what I voted in the batshit insanity poll. It's been making me wish you'd put up another donation drive so that we could get you updating five days a week, since three days is just too many days to have to wait, and a M-T-Th-F schedule would make my Wednesdays have no meaning.
