Assume I was a government that had decided that the Internet was too insecure, and that a new, more authenticatable version was needed. Let's also assume I had already proved that I had virtually no respect for civil liberties and maybe wanted to make sure that I could eavesdrop on conversations and traffic with as little overhead as possible. Wouldn't a system to enable that be much simpler to implement if almost everybody used the same computer systems and authentication services.
Almost makes you wonder why the anti-trust case had such a wimpy outcome, eh?
