So Here's The Deal.

Monday, February 28, 2005 - 09:24 AM

Today is the last day of February, which means that it will be the second month in a row where I've failed to meet my obligation for Sunday strips for our premium members. The last two months have been a blur of travel and freelance work, and I've fallen behind on just about everything that is important to me. Those of you who follow these sorts of things know that I've been freelancing as a web developer for the last year or so. I had quit my full-time job in the hopes that freelancing would allow me a more flexible schedule and permit me to work on Goats inbetween projects. That strategy completely failed. Demand for my freelancing services continued to increase, and I was unable to keep the flood under control. It began to eat into my cartooning time. After I missed the Premium deadline last month, I knew it was time to do something about it.

So, after some heart-to-hearts with Arnaud and Mike, they've agreed to bring me on board their design firm for three days a week, providing me with some stable income, but more importantly, providing me with two days a week that I can fully devote to Goats. Combined with evenings and weekends, I'm hopeful that this will allow me to catch up on all of our various projects and fulfill my responsibilities to you guys.

My primary goal is to catch up on Sunday strips; hopefully by the end of the month we'll be back on track. I want to thank all of our Premium folks for not lynching me and being so understanding. We've got a lot of great stuff planned, and I'm itching to work on it.

As a reward for your patience, I want to share with you a piece of work that's taken up a lot of my February. My friends Marc and Marjorie are getting married next month, and they've honored me by asking me to illustrate their Ketubah (a central part of a Jewish wedding is the signing of the Ketubah, a marriage contract granting the woman various rights in the partnership). Click the detail below for the full illustration.

The subscription's cheap, the SPEY merchandise alone is worth it, and I'm still giggling at the daily strips. Take all the time you need.

Thanks for the lowdown Jon. I'm glad you had lots of freelance work keeping you busy and it wasn't just putting the Sunday strips off with the "I can do it tomorrow" mindset. Good luck with job.

The Ketubah picture is very nice. I'd be worried with Oliver being involved in my marriage if I were Marc and Marjorie. Is Jewish tradition so strong that there is a marriage contract granting the woman various rights in the partnership or is it more of a symbolic thing with women having "equal rights"?

No, it specifically outlines financial rights (and some sexual ones too, IIRC). It was fairly progressive for its time.

Wow. That's… beautiful.

If I ever catch a man and tie him up and marry him, will you do my Ketubah?

Cool.

So which (if any) of the sites in their portfolio section have you designed/contributed to? What's your best/favorite one?

It always bugs me to see people designing sites better than I can. DAMMIT, WHY CAN'T YOU SUCK MORE?!? I guess I just need to keep practicing.

Also, is there a way we could see a higher-res version of that artwork? There's so much detail in it.

Here's a larger version of the ketubah. [goats.com]

Most of the sites were designed by Arnaud; I help implement his designs occasionally, but I don't think much of the work I've done with them is represented in that list.

If I could have had a marriage contract that featured a tree full of beer-drinking monkeys, that might have been worth a foreskin.

That is hands down the best Ketubah artwork I've ever seen! I don't know them (or you) but the artwork itself says a lot (of good things) about their impending marriage.

It's absolutely lovely. I wish I had one half as nice. Pass along my complete jealousy - and good wishes for the wedding. :)

Jon, that is the greatest Ketubah I have ever seen, and having worked as an assistant to an Orthodox event photographer, I've seen quite a few.
