Fun With Pain

Monday, February 21, 2005 - 11:59 AM

I'm off to an oral surgeon with a tooth that clearly hates me and wishes to strike out on its own. If there's no new strip tomorrow, you can blame the tooth. I'll update later if I am conscious.

UPDATE: Well, they yanked my wisdom tooth and I'm in a world of hurt. My apologies, but I don't think I'm going to have a new strip for you on Tuesday; hopefully I'll be well enough to put one up for Wednesday.

Are you sure you don't want "medication" because of the death of Hunter S. Thompson [goats.com]?

Well, they prescribed some Vicodin. I'm going to take some after I eat and remember the doctor fondly.

Or weirdly. Whichever.

I know your pain Jon. I had my wisdom teeth pulled and only had Advil to ease my pain. My doctor didn't want any narcotic painkillers to possibly mess with my anti-spasm drugs (all non-narcotic). They didn't even put me out, just lots of Novicain. Not fun.

Get well.

I had my wisdoms out when I was 22; the bastard oral surgeon let me come out of anesthesia and refused to put me back under. Thus, I can tell you from first-hand experience that when impacted, wisdom teeth are shattered in the jaw with a pneumatic chisel, and the pieces picked out. Ick.

I'm starting to feel pretty satisfied that I don't have insurance or enough money for dental work. I feel I'm doing well as long as I brush and floss every day.

Don't fool yourself Gemimi. Try to get a cleaning at least once a year. You may feel fine now but only the dentist knows what's really happening to your pearly whites. Better to spend a little money now versus a lot later.

Rich is right, Gemmi. I'm in quite the similar boat, and had only been going to the dentist for emergencies for most of my life -- and although I brushed and flossed most every day, some things only your dentist can resolve easily.

Now, I'm going to need to find a nice dentist to love if I ever want to afford repairs. I have several broken teeth and the gum disease -- perhaps you've heard of it -- gingivitis. (eerie organ music plays)......

I've never had any cavaties, never broken or chipped a tooth, and only once did I have to have one extracted - my baby tooth wouldn't come out to make room for the mature canine so it sits in my gums at a slight angle("fang") - so I'd say that my dental health isn't something that I'm really worried about. Being as young as I am, I think I have at most a couple more years before I need to seriously start seeing a dentist again. And I have this big thing about my wisdom teeth; if they could just stay in there for the rest of my life I think I'll be fine.

All the more reason to go NOW. Head off any potential problems early! Especially if you drink a lot of sugary drinks, eat junky food, or smoke. Just looking out for your teeth.

My tooffusses are beautiful, white and straight and no cavities, and I brush and floss every day. And, four years ago, i had one die from the inside out from something called internal resporption, which usually happens only to people like boxers and football players whose heads get knocked about. We had no idea why it happened, but I had to get a bridge on my lower molars. Perfectly healthy teeth all around it. And last year, I had two teeth abcess. We caught it early on in an x-ray during a routine exam. Seen Castaway? That was an abcess gone wild. I'm very glad we were able to take care of it early as I had no clue there was a problem. A cleaning and exam is CHEAP. Don't skip them. For any reason.
