The RFV Revolution

Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 12:03 PM

Check it out, superfriends: Until the end of September, if you buy a Republicans for Voldemort or Jesus Loves Dick t-shirt or babydoll t-shirt, we'll donate a dollar to MoveOn. Buy both and we'll donate two bucks. Spread the word, my children. I want to get these things on as many backs as possible before November.

For those of you who haven't seen the strips these are based on, check out these links:

The RFV street team is going to be out in force (i.e., a couple of guys walking around in matching t-shirts) during the protests here in New York City during the RNC. We'll be handing out free RFV bumper stickers and getting hassled by the Man. If you're going out to the protests as well, wear your RFV t-shirt and come say hi if you see us. We'll give you a bunch of free stickers.

I'm going to try and bring my camera. Hopefully we'll be able to give you a glimpse of the end of civilization in a few days.

What if we buy one of them, but don't want you to donate anything? Would you do that for us?

Yes, I suppose we'll do that if you request. But we won't be happy about it.

Of course, in that case, I might donate a dollar out of my own pocket, just to be spiteful. Go spite!

Well I'm just saying that for someone like me, your posted incentive would be a deterrent to my purchase. Though if you wanted to instead donate a dollar to your own moonthewhitehouse idea, I'd be up for that. Mooning the White House would be funny.

While I agree with TheMysticalOne, I've already got my RFV t-shirt, so do what you like. At least you're not a bunch of violent anarchists [nytimes.com].
I'm reasonably certain that stoning folks you disagree with doesn't count as free speech.

What if we use bibles instead of stones?

Is it morally correct then, even if it's not "free speech"?

the only "morally correct" thing to do with a bible is to throw it... out. And there is no such thing as "free speech" -- it's all pay-as-you-go. Beer is your EZ-Pass.

Well, that's not true.

It's much better, morally, to recycle.

Penn and Teller disagree!

Well, I only assume Teller disagrees. He didn't say much about it, really.

It's been several years since I've rabidly followed Penn&Teller (basically, since Penn&Teller Get Killed - which is probably a lot longer than I want it to be).

So, cite?

Also, I'm sure they do agree - in that "reuse" is a form of "recycle". And it's really more reuse than recycle that I meant anyway. A good bible will provide enough charcoal starting material for at least a year, and that's a lot of good eats!

[Penn & Teller's Bullshit] [sho.com], a show that takes subjects that P&T really don't like and exposes the common lies behind.

I find it plenty entertaining, and although it'd be foolish to use a show made for entertainment value as a cardinal source of information, the shows they do on subjects that aren't clearly hogwash to begin with do at least present some interesting arguments.

At any rate, the show they did on recycling was interesting, presenting information that the recycling push was formed on false premises and alarmism from an intentionally skewed EPA document in the 80's, and that most forms of materials recycling (papers, plastics) actually end up with negative cost/benefit ratios.

I doubt they would have a problem with reuse at all, though. I was just being sideways referency.

The revolution has infiltrated the streets of North Carolina! Well, at least I saw a RFV bumpersticker. Then again, compared to Jesse Helms, Voldemort is a moderate.
