POLL: Get Ready For More Comics

Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - 09:04 AM

In only three weeks, you guys have helped us to raise $10,000, which has in turn helped us to pay rent and credit card bills and generally keep us out of debtor's prison. It's allowed me to concentrate on working on Goats, and helped me come closer to realizing my dream than ever before. Thank you to each and every one of you who have donated.

As promised, Goats will now move to a four-a-week schedule, Monday through Thursday, starting August 2nd (shortly after we return from Comic-Con, which you should go to! More on that later). I've been flexing my cartooning muscles and hopefully I'll be able to keep up with the increased demand. I've got the next few months' worth of storyline plotted out, and it promises to be a good one with lots of intrigue, mystery, a little bit of horror, a little bit of violence, and lots of running around aimlessly.

We're not completely out of the woods yet; $10,000 is a big help, but isn't enough for both of us to live on, to be certain. At the same time, I know that these donation drives are a strain on readers' wallets. So we're thinking of putting the drive on pause for a few months while everyone recuperates from this one (probably to return in the fall, or in April to celebrate our eighth anniversary). At that point, we'd pick up where we left off on the path to $20,000 and five comics a week.

What do you think? We'll leave the decision up to you.

UPDATE: Looks like most of you think we should give it a rest for a while, and I can't say I disagree. Barring some wild shift in the voting pattern, we'll leave donations open until Friday, at which point we'll shut it down for a few months; wherever we leave off will be the point at which we resume later on, so don't worry -- your donations will still count towards getting Goats up to five days a week.

This will be the last chance you'll have to get original art at the $100 donation level (we will probably up the price a bit for the next donations round), so if you've been wavering between picking up a piece and, say, spending that hundred bucks on taffy, take that into consideration when making your decision.

POLL: Should we pause the donations drive for a few months?

37% (215) Yes, my wallet hurts and needs time to recover

27% (156) No, I want to donate more and get to five comics a week as soon as possible

35% (201) Forget this piddly nonsense, I have millions of dollars and will be your sugar daddy
572 people have voted in this poll. (This poll is not active.)

Thanks again to those of you who have donated, and especially to those of you who donated enough to receive original art. I had wanted to send out the strips earlier, but Comic-Con preparations have taken their toll and I've been super-busy. I'm hoping to have them int he mail by the time we leave next week. Thanks for your patience.

This morning I'm thinking "I get paid tomorrow, I can finally sling $100 Jon's way." And then I read the post.

Congrats on hitting $10,000 though.

Yeah, I'll second that. I'm going traveling, something I've wanted to do and been saving up for, for years. When I get back, I may have cash left over, I may not. If I do, I will certainly send some more your way, probably in the form of finally becoming a real, full-fledged member.

Along those lines -- if there's anything you'd like me to pick up for you in Russia or China, please let me know and I will gladly get it for you and ship it your way once I get back to the states.

Jon,
Would you suggest hanging on to the PayPal confirmation notice if a person donates enough to purchase a strip? Does it not matter? I'd hate for the proof be soley kept on the PayPal side of the force.

Why not not pause it, but not require that people donate right now? If it's open, and people are able to donate, then they can donate if they want to. If they can't yet (or still), then they can wait until they can. Just keep donations open permanently!

This sounds like the best idea, why stop it at all?

Separately, what kind of donations have you received most, though; $100 plus for strip art, or smaller donations? I've noticed that when the meter goes up it always seems to go up in hundreds, so I'm guessing that most people are really looking for something in return...

How about cheaper 'rewards'? Like signed prints or things which can be reproduced much more easily?

Lots of good comments in here; I'm going to address them all in this post.

Why not not pause it, but not require that people donate right now? If it's open, and people are able to donate, then they can donate if they want to. If they can't yet (or still), then they can wait until they can. Just keep donations open permanently!

I'd love to be able to keep donations open permanently, but we've tried this in the past and it fails in the long run. Any time we post something new on the site, like a donations drive or a new merchandise item, initial response is always the best, and then interest tapers off over the next few days. Keeping donations open permanently would almost guarantee that we would cease to get any after a few more weeks.

You may remember that we used to have a monthly donations goal some time back; that started out well, but people lost interest in it after a while, and we had to switch to a subscription model. I'm hoping that by limiting the donations drives (maybe we'll try one once a year or something), people will be more enthusiastic about it.

Also, it's a pain in the ass when someone is begging you for money all the time. I don't want to be that guy if I can help it.

I was thinking it'd be nice if the extended info for each strip mentioned whether the original art was still available.

Like I said before, we're working on this, but i wanted to explain some of the specifics. More than half of our donations came in from people who wanted to purchase strip art; it would be silly not to make this an option. When we get the chance, we're going to set up a database containing all of the available art. Each strip that has art available for it will have a link underneath that will allow you to purchase the art. Once it is purchased, the link will disappear.

We may also use this same system to sell hi-res signed prints at a somewhat more affordable price. I'm not sure when we'll have this in place except to say that it will be as soon as we can get it up and running.

The price per piece will probably go up somewhat from the $100 we're asking for in the donations drive. That's called incentive.

Could you keep open the option of original art for a $100 donation even if the drive isn't officially going? 'cause I'd like me some art, and may (possibly) be able to afford it in the next couple months...

Like I said, once we have the above system in place you'll be able to purchase art for all available strips. The price may be a bit higher, though -- probably not by too much. But all art purchases will count towards the next donation drive and towards the 5 strips per week goal, so no worries there.

Separately, what kind of donations have you received most, though; $100 plus for strip art, or smaller donations? I've noticed that when the meter goes up it always seems to go up in hundreds, so I'm guessing that most people are really looking for something in return...

The meter goes up in hundreds because I only update it once a day or so. But about half the donations have been for $100 or more, which is somewhat unbelievable to me.

If we get signed prints working (as I mentioned above), that would certainly be something we could include as a reward, but we'll have to figure out how that will work. All these projects take time, unfortunately, and I have very little of it. But someday, hopefully.

Thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions!
