Go and scroll up to the top of the page. See that weird-ass dark orange bar in the upper-right hand corner? Move your mouse over it.

Groovy, huh?

Current functionality is limited, but I hope to have some additional features built into that little panel. What do you guys think about an archive bookmark feature, or a feature where you could add your comic bookmarks?

Do people even care about that sort of thing?

Strange that you don't see it; perhaps you have the old page cached?

my userContent.css file was blocking it.
for those not in the know, that file alows one to block certan html things, like adds, from displaying. it has worked wonderfully for all types of adds, flash, banner. anyway, the problem is not at your end.

I think the dark orange bar hiding information of destruction and various promotive items was an excellent idea, Jon. Just as cool as giving titles to all of your links on the main page in news posts.

And in regards to an archive bookmark feature, I would have found it useful before spending a week veggin' in front of my computer in high school catching up on five years of Goats. I think it would definitely benefit newcomers.

Although I'd find it fun, so I can quickly point friends unknowingly towards Phillip giving Gertie a deep tissue massage, or bad Space-Time puns.

Is this completely replacing the banner ads, then?

Or are you still going integrate them sumwhere else?

Banner ads are gone, probably forever. I don't like 'em and they're not terribly effective. I suppose that they would be more effective if we put some effort into it (I've dropped the ball on some potential advertisers), but I've got other things to do which bring in a lot more revenue.

I'm tossing around the idea of adding some of those google text ads to the site, since they're easy to do and targeted and less intrusive than banners. But that would be lower on the site, maybe next to the news in a column. Preemies would still have the option to block any ads we put on the site (except the ones for our merchandise, which aren't really ads).

What do you think?

At my standard browser page width (which doesn't give me any horizontal scrollbars on this site), that dark bar is covering up most of the "premium" tab. I keep trying to use that to navigate but the darker bar becomes active, sometimes even if the mouse is over the visible part of "premium".

I personally really don't like the Google text ads.

Which may be a good enough reason for you to start using them... ;-)

Particularly, people tend to stick them in places where it's not necessarily as evident that they are not "normal" content. That's one thing I do like about banner ads - they are very easy to separate from "real" content and thus ignore.

But if throwing some Google text ads amounts to "free" money, then why are you bothering to ask us? We're gonna complain anyway.

I also don't like the shade of orange that the new top of the page is, but that's just me and I can deal.

I doubt I'd use the add your comics bookmark because of my link page already AND when I'm done reading/editing/posting in Goats I log out and leave for other sites. Yes, I don't keep a browser dedicated to Goats. Don't hate me any more.

In Mozilla 1.5, I get the tail end of the comic list superimposed over the dark orange bar. When I mouseover it, I get the presumably correct behaviour of it dropping down, but there's no background on the newly revealed part, it's transparent. This makes the text quite hard to read. The tail end of the comic strip remains dangling below where it probably should be dangling.

The oversized comic list part is easy to explain: I've set my minimum font size to 14px, on account of certain non goat related forums having ridiculously small fonts. The setting is global, not per site, so presumably you're assuming my browser is obeying the font-size directives in your CSS, when it in fact is not.

Not sure why the div isn't taking a background colour, though. I'll upgrade Mozilla and see what happens.

Mozilla 1.6 correctly displays a background. Maybe I'll look into a user CSS file to prevent those icky tiny forum fonts.

Thanks for the heads-up. I did this the lazy way, and that's why you're encountering that. I need to make two separate divs and position them properly.

The background problem is probably related to the transparency filter I'm using -- I bet 1.5 doesn't support it properly. My fault for wanting to be all bells and whistles. I'll try some tweaks over the next couple of days.

Remember the good ol' days when there were only two browsers to worry about coding for? Sigh...now we (by we I mean web designers) need to worry about at least 5 or 6. Which is kinda irritating, when you consider that IE is about 85-90% of the browser market, and the other ones are fighting for dominance over that remaining 10-15%.

Highly nifty! Especially since it includes most comics I'd want to check on anyhow. Just about makes up for the orange color scheme! Just about. (Sorry, you'll never convert me on that, orange and I have a long-standing feud going on.)

I'm so happy that Goats and S*P are officially friends now. My two favorite comics, happily co-linking.
