Be a Goats Character For Charity

Monday, March 15, 2004 - 08:30 AM

Our friend Beeeej's law school, Cardozo, is having an auction on Wednesday, March 24 to benefit its Public Interest Stipend Program for students who take unpaid summer jobs working for the greater good instead of shilling for soulless corporate suits. I like the idea of unpaid lawyers, so I donated a couple of Goats-related items to be auctioned off.

First is a full set of the three Goats books - the casebound, numbered, limited-edition type - signed by yours truly.

You can also bid on the right to have me draw you into a "Goats" strip. Well, a character based on you, anyway - and take note, I can't promise not to use some creative license. Beeeej himself found that out last Friday. But you can join him in immortality!

The cool part for those of you who can't make it to our fair city is that you don't have to be at the Auction to bid. If you have a pretty good idea of how much you'd be willing to pay for these things, you can sign up for proxy bidding.

But if you can make it to the Auction, there's a ton of other cool things they're auctioning off, too, and it's all for a good cause.

The only thing that I can say is a probable down side to this whole thing is that the people who can afford to bid the most for this thing may not have personalities that are as quirky as those who can't, so inevitably the comic suffers. I mean, how many suit-wearing executives have you seen on the subway, talking to themselves threateningly in high, tinny voices?

Also, if the character is from Australia or Canada or some other forsaken place, then they'll have to be "that-guy-who-sometimes-flies-in-from- Australia-for-no-good-reason".

Now, I'm not saying this all just because I'm poor [cheap] and located a mere storyline-friendly six hour car ride from Manhattan.

Personally, I was looking forward to seeing if Phillip would forget he's already a character in the strip and try to bid on that item.

I wonder if Jon would be willing to let us auction off the right not to be a character in "Goats"?

If I were to win the lottery, I'd gladly bid very high. I'm also in a reasonably short distance. The comic strip could take place at an RIT/Cornell hockey game. We could kill each other! It'd be grand.

It's probably worth mentioning, then, that the minimum bid on the "be a 'Goats' character" item is probably going to be something like $10 or $20... so bidding "very high" may not be necessary to win the bidding.

Actually, the way it works from what I've read is you give them a maximum bid, and they get some minion to bid only what he has to to get it. So you could essentially tell them your maximum bid is $2 520 000 yet still only have to buy it for $27.

The flaw in that is that two people could do such a thing. Then they'd have a really expensive guest appearance. :)

And even worse still, because they're minions, they'd probably sit there and increase their bids by $5 at a time. if 2 people had said $1 000 000, it could take days to decide who gets the appearance.

But, if they had $1,000,000, they'd be bidding on green dresses instead of Goats appearances.

Or maybe fancy catsup.

I really need to add an "ironic, +1" modifier.

I'm fairly certain Beeeeeeeej knows how the auction works, as he is the one running it. I probably should have been more specific about that bit (or he should have been, since he wrote the initial draft of the post).

That's kinda humbling.

Thankfully you didn't choose "Smartarse, -1". I'd probably be back to my old Wage Slavey self in no time.

Oh, and thanks for posting the latest strip. I greatly enjoy seeing it automatically pop up on my desktop as soon as it's available.

Sorry 'bout that. Here's a brief explanation:

Say, for instance, we set the minimum bid at $20 and the "increments" at $10. In the context of being present at the Auction, that means if someone has bid $40, you have to bid $50 to outbid them.

If we get two proxy bids in advance of the Auction, we don't wait until the Auction and have two students battle it out. If we have a $50 proxy bid and an $80 proxy bid, we'd consider the first person "outbid," use the $10 increment, and place a $60 bid for the second person at the outset.

The proxy bidding on being drawn into a strip, by the way, has begun - and no, I can't tell you how much. :-{)}
