Tasty Yet Morally Ambiguous and More

Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 11:16 PM

Tasty Yet Morally Ambiguous, Volumes I & II of Goats, is now available for purchase in our newly revamped store. TYMA is a double-sized collection with almost 500 comic strips comprising the first two years of Goats. The book also includes quotes from your favorite webcomics artists, a foreword by R Stevens, and an introduction and commentary on selected strips by Yours Truly.

You can purchase TYMA by itself or as part of our Ultimate Goats Paperback Book Bundle, which includes all three Goats books and comes with the new Goats minicomic Contains One Space Battle (which can also be purchased separately here). Contains One Space Battle is an all-new original 17 page Goats story in full color.

We're also offering our Fish & Friends Button Pack, which contains all seven of our 1.25" character buttons. Sweet.

For those of you who have preordered TYMA in its limited edition casebound variant, don't sweat -- we've received the hardcover books just today and we'll be shipping those out to you within the next week or so. We worked with a new printer on these, and it took an extra-long time to make sure that the books met our exact specifications. We think you'll be happy with the results. Thanks for your patience.

Ordered the book and the comic just now. At last, my set is at least chronological. Now I'll have to start holding my breath for Vol. 5.

One minor nitpick I have is with the cover. First, let me say that I think the new design looks much nicer, and is much more professional looking. However, it always bugs me when a certain style is established, and then isn't followed for the rest of a series. After all, Garfield's books have had the exact same style for their covers since the early 80's. But oh well. How long do you look at the cover? And like I said, the new look is much better.

You should see me go on and on about the New Jedi Order books, and how some are hardcover, some are paperback, the titles are never in the same place, the printing on the spines doesn't even attempt to match up...yea, there I go.

One minor nitpick I have is with the cover.

As a fanboy-type and collector myself, I understand you, and I had very much the same conversation with myself when the decision was made to change the cover.

But having been to conventions with the book, and having dealt with distributors and stores now, I have a better understanding of how people make their purchase decisions when they are browsing items on a shelf or in a crowded marketplace. They buy things that are shiny.

Thus, the new book is shiny.

I took great pains to make sure that, despite the changes, the books stil feel like part of the same family. The title treatments are the same, the dimensions are the same, the titles and such on the spine line up nicely, and the interior design is the same (with minor modifications for the extra content, all in the spirit of the existing design).

But I don't think it's smart to lock yourself into a design decision that you think is a bad one just for the sake of consistency. Better that we correct the mistakes we can, in the best way that we can, ad look forward to a bright (and dhiny-covered) future.

Ah, Garfield, the touchstone of printed comic strip books. I for one think we have met our Garfield quota for the year.

Looking at them, I assume we're talking about the paperback copies, yes? In that case, have you considered a new edition of Vols 3 and 4 that conform to the new cover design?

(Of course, I'm assuming that the cost involved wouldn't be so extreme that you have to sell billions of copies to make it worthwhile, which may be a bad assumption...)

Could sell just a fly cover for the old ones... that would remove the cost of reprinting and maybe entice people that wouldn't have bought another copy but would buy a cheap ish option that appeals to their anal retentive predilections.

I just got home from bringing the first batch of hardcovers to the post office. They're super-heavy, which required us to send them media mail this time. It'll take a few days more (the guy said between 2-5 days depending), but we put them in nice padded envelopes to make up for it.

We have to fill out customs slips still for the internationals still. Those plus the leftovers will probably go out within the next few days (it being V-day this weekend, we have to step away from our goatly duties for a bit this weekend).

The paperbacks should be shipping with our normal 2-4 week delay. Has anyone received theirs yet?

Got my T,YMA #107 to match the other two #107s last night. Great book! Jon, you may say that they were "The Crap Years" but some of the stuff is still really funny. I also find it easier to read the longer storylines in Dead Tree format than online, like you say in the intro: might have something to do with the feel of paper.

Good job to everyone that worked on this!

I've been wondering. Here it is, Sadie Hawkins Day, and I have yet to received my hardback version of TYMA. Is this because I am the victim of some intergalactic form of persecution, or is it because it has yet to be mailed to me? Should I go picket my local post office for incompetance, risking the disgruntlement of a government employee?

Thanks!

Now I get to go into work tomorrow late and hungover.

"Because of Goats!" I'll reply, and go on my merry way.

That should be good for a day off at some point.
Thanks again!

Theoretically I've got my #169 to match my others. Except that I'm really not sure. However, I have it on good authority that it is there. The kind of authority given by a mother. I know it is this kind of authority, since my mother spoke the words. You know the words.
