After passing them out to friends, family, and co-workers I still have 2 gmail invite codes. So since this form is a s00per sekrit clubhouse, I figured I'd share them with other members. Anybody want them? First come, first served...

I'm tempted ... but I really can't justify snagging one at the expense of anyone else. I simply don't need it.

Drat, I should check these fora more often. If any one else ends up with a gmail invite code to give please keep me in mind. It may be very useful for sending pictures from Africa.

No, we have American pints.

An Imperial pint, if I understand it and remember it correctly, is roughly 20 oz., whereas an American pint is roughly 16 oz.

A 'mid', to which you so sordidly refer, is in fact nothing to do with the size of a beer. It refers to the strength of the beverage, being a mid-strength (or as those meat-headed, over-reactive, ADHD-infected, hopped-up mexicans call it: 'Goldie')

I do believe, however that our pints contain 540mL, and in fact no oz. at all. Even still, a pint of a basic heavy (or full-strength for those non-eastern-staters) would normally cost around $5AU (or about $3.25US)

So tynic, got enough tobacco there? I got plenty more here if needs be...

Ok, well now I'm more out of the loop than ever.

I mean, I come from a place which has schooners (285mL), pints (425mL), imperial pints (approx 500mL) and steins (550mL). Easy, right?

Now I'm in NSW, a schooner is now called a midi. What they call a schooner looks to me like a pint. And a pint seems to mean something slightly bigger than an imperial pint (your 540mL watchamajooga, i imagine). So I thought I'd finally got it sorted, having been here 18 months, and now you tell me QLD doesn't have midi's? Don't tell me I have to learn a whole other system.

At least jugs seem to be the same everywhere ...

I know what a mid and a heavy are, sparky. I'm talkin' about a 'midi'. And don't look at me like that - I didn't make up the word.

Yeah, that's completely different as far as I've seen.

I'm not sure about south qld, but whenever I've ordered beer, it's always been pot (your schooner, or a grenade when in bottles), schooner (your pint, or stubbie), and pint. It gets a bit blurry between that and a Jug (tallies, steins, blahblahblah).

But I'll agree. Jugs are good.

You are, however, making me start to doubt whether I've actually got this right. I mean it's true that our mozzies are bigger, and the crocs put the rest of the world to shame, but our beer is bigger too? especially when it only takes half the time (ie. less than 10 minutes) for a stubbie to go hot? And did the old cafepress pint glasses seem smaller than normal to anyone else? must be this pommy/us pint thing...

Well, I can state with certainty that the ordinary pints in SA are smaller than the pints on the eastern seaboard. Since Adelaide has a more ... genteel heritage than the east, as well as being more recently settled, we have retained more english customs, such as accent, and possibly beer sizing. So it is possble.

What we need is a beer etymologist.

It's my favourite size beer. For a typically convoluted reason.

In NSW we have Pints (around 600ml), Schooners (about 450) and the midi (about 250?).

I find the schooner to be the best lunch / after work size beer and rounds are assumed to such. However whenever I am buying a round and someone goes out of their way to be annoying by asking for a midi, I buy everyone pints.

Oh I make me giggle.

It's kind of a personal homage to the young ones[1], it also stops people from asking for a midi and thereby taxing my, usually, inebriated grey matter.

[1] Vivian goes to the bar and everyone is asking for annoying stuff, (from memory)
Mike: Babycham,
Neil: Water and some not meat flavoured crisps, Rik: Water (it's not cool to drink kids).

So Vivian gets Roast Ox flavored crisps and pints of lager for all.
