sunday for the people
posted Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 01:04 PM (#15032)
First off, my apologies for the delay in this month's Sunday strip. I've been having difficulty with a panel for reasons which will be obvious once I'm finished. I've had to start and restart about a half-dozen times, but I hope the end result will be worth it. I'm working on it today; hopefully I can get it done this weekend. Otherwise expect it sometime within the next week or so.

Incidentally, I've gone back to work fulltime, so time management has become a bit of an issue as well. I'm hoping that a year or so from now work will go away and I won't need to deny you your Sunday strips.

Which brings me to the point of this post. In an effort to get more people signed up for premium, so i can be a real cartoonist and not have to work, we'd like to give them a sample of the sunday strips. But they belong to you, so I need your permission to do so.

POLL: Can we offer one of our Sunday Strips for free to the general public in an attempt to get them interested in signing up for Premium?

80% (25) Sure, why not

6% (2) Hell no

12% (4) 3
31 people have voted in this poll. (This poll is not active.)

Also, does it matter where we start the polls?

yes. for instance, the bagel shop is not a good place. I usually get good results at voting booths. Go get 'em tiger!

I demand a recount! The ballot was confusing and I didn't mean to vote for Pat Buchanan.

I voted 'no' only because you offered a free sample [goats.com] in Nov. to entice people to sign up. I don't know how many did because of it.
If the sample wasn't a World of Peril, say the Readers Ask More Stuff [goats.com] strip, I'd be ok with it. That one was open to all registered usere questions but ONLY preemies could see the strip. Again, another nice enticement to sign up. Maybe if they saw the fruits of their (questions) and your (the strip) labor were they might sign up.
That's just my $0.17 cents.

Yeah, but that was only half a strip and it didn't have nearly as much violence in it as this month's does.

I voted "sure, why not" because I don't want my petty little right (exclusive Sundays) to stop Jon from doing pretty much anything that might bring him money. At the end of the day, it's up to Jon to market the strip for the benefit of us all.

Cheers,

Upon reading the bloodstained comic, (the blood was the hassle right? It came out great.) if you want to tease the non-preemies with this strip that's ok. It has enough plot questions (what are the green things?, get us a portal?) that they should want answered to hopefully lead them to subscribe.
If that doesn't work I'm at a loss. Cheap bastards.

Nah, blood is easy. figuring out the angles and character positions and getting lots of monsters in there was tough. I think i did about a dozen preliminary sketches.

Positioning multiple entities in an action sequence is tough. Just when you think you've got it right, you realise the perspective is wrong and the monster in the back appears to be in the front, like some sort of inverse 3D. Then the readers' heads explode and it's just a bad experience for everyone.

Nevertheless, that actiontastic panel really rocks.

If you could just learn to draw in 3D, i think that'd really get those monsters to pop out of the page...
