Cult Movies: Classics and Trash
posted Friday, December 05, 2003 - 09:21 AM (#11327)
So Kornz and I have been having a little discussion [goats.com] about bad acting and cult movies.

I thought I'd follow up in a new thread, to give the rest of you some room to discuss. Plus that other one was getting kinda full.

What are your favorite "cult" movies? Does it matter if the acting in them is bad?

I've mentioned some of mine already. Darkstar, Ice Pirates, Krull. For the record, I didn't "like" Darkstar or Krull. But they've got that cult appeal that means I'll watch them late at night with some beers.

I also have a certain fondness for Attack of The Killer Tomatoes, The Evil Dead set of films, and "Nice Girls Don't Explode".

And if anyone can find me a copy of Eliminators [imdb.com] on DVD, I'll be grateful.

But definately stay away from anything starring David and Peter Paul. The Horror!!!

Soylent Green [amazon.com] always comes to mind when I think of a 'bad' cult film. Great premise of a story line, horrible acting / Execution. So of course, I own a copy. Same thing goes for F 451 [amazon.com], although I'm not sure if it's cult or not; great book / story, horrible film

As far as one that I've got no problem calling fantastic, you cant beat Alex and the gang. [amazon.com]

Has anyone seen Repo Man? [amazon.com] One of the guys in my band brought it over last night to watch after practice. I'm not sure if I could have sat through it without a few beers.

Repo Man [imdb.com] is another classic, if only for Tracey Walter's running commentary.

Plus, it's got a spaceship that's also a time machine.

Just one picture of Sean Connery in this movie makes it all worthwhile. The Bandit is jealous.

You know it's only a matter of time before someone brings up Mystery Science Theater 3000. So consider it brought up. Now move on with your lives.

One cult favorite of mine from the past few years is Boondock Saints. I've found that people either love it or hate it, with very little in-betweening. I think it's great, personally.

Dead Alive [imdb.com]. A nice horror parody from Peter Jackson.

Let's see. What else? How about The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension [imdb.com]

My favorite MST3k has to be Pod People [amazon.com]

How about The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension?

I was given this DVD last Christmas... I had, of course, heard of the movie, but hadn't seen it. It is, by far, the most random film I have ever seen (some people tell me Go [imdb.com] is more random, but I've never seen it). I guess, if there were some backstory that I knew about Buckaroo Banzai and his team, it would have helped going into this, but since I didn't know anything about them, it was more than a little disorienting.

Random? Buckaroo Banzai?

Again, I refer you to Eliminators, referenced above. The "Tagline" for this film is " Mandroid. Mercenary. Scientist. Ninja. Each one a specialist. Together they are ELIMINATORS! ".

See, the basic plot of this film is that the Mandroid/Cyborg needs the Mercenary to take him, the female Robot Scientist and her annoying robot pet along with the Ninja on a riverboat journey upstream. Once they get to their destination, they have to work together to stop the Mad Scientist (who is also a robot scientist AND turned himself into a Cyborg) from going back in time and becoming the emperor of Rome.

This movie is basically a cheap KNOCKOFF of Buckaroo Banzai.

But granted, it's no Deathstalker 3D.

That's one of my favorite movies, and I'm surprised how few people have seen it. I wouldn't say it's random, it's got a pulp fiction feel to the story telling; but some of the situations that the folks get into are pretty bizarre. It is a damn funny movie though, and I highly recomend it.

Wow, no kidding. I just added it to my Netflix queue, and decided to go through the comments [netflix.com].

The scores are basically either a 5 or a 1. There are a couple of 4s, a couple of 3s, and one 2 that I could find, but overwhelmingly people do seem to either love it or hate it.

Thanks to you folks, I've been adding quite a few of your suggested movies to my Netflix queue. In the realm of movies/cinema, I'm pretty uncultured, kind of like someone who has eaten pretty much nothing but Mayo sandwiches their entire life.

So I'm starting to finally sink into the world of the silver screen thanks to Netflix, which brings me to my next question: is anyone else using this fine service? I'm not putting this out as an ad for them; I'm sure there are other DVD distro services that are just as nifty, and there's something to be said about visiting your local video store -- the strong familiar smell of the metal shelving, and the feel of the plastic DVD case under their fingers.

Anyway, I just thought it might be interesting for members to post their queues, so we could see what other people are renting/watching. It might provide a chance for inspiration and guidance ("You're going to rent that?1? Remove it from your queue NOW!") to others. Just a thought.

Ack, I knew I forgot one of my favorites. You know, I hadn't heard that. If it was true, why didn't they mention it on the DVD? When I listened to the commentary, John Carpenter said that he made it based on some of his favorite Asian fighting movies -- Zu Warriors of Magic Mountain [imdb.com] and Swords of Fame ( or Flame...He couldn't remember the name, and I can't find it ). I don't recall any mention of Buckaroo Banzai.

Run Lola Run [imdb.com] - Its a bizarre foreign film, but interesting to watch.

Also, The Limey [imdb.com]. Reminds me a lot of Payback [imdb.com] because the main character of each movie is more an anti-hero than a good guy.
