The Days of Yore

This is a bad grandfather moment, but does anyone remember the good old days of about 10 years ago? Back when Nick at Nite meant Green Acres, Dragnet, and Mister Ed? Back when Comedy Central was a beacon of good times instead of a smouldering pile of bad Saturday Night Live reruns? Well, I do, and I'm feeling a bit nostalgic.

What do you miss?

well, ten years ago, I was still a kid. So the biggest thing I miss is my booming black market in Jolly Ranchers.

Arrrgh! I remember the days before cable television. I remember the days when you could put on a pot of coffee in the time it took for the TV to warm up. I remember watching Green Acres and Petticoat Junction, and the Gong show.

Oh god... please tell me I'm not old.

Well, I have to admit that I was only 8 years old at the time, and at such a young age you tend to take most things for granted, so there are many things I never bothered to commit to memory.

The thing I miss the most about the "old" Comedy Central (well, other than MST3K) is a show called Short Attention Span Theater. They seem to be trying to bring back something like it, recently, in their new show Comic Remix, but, quite frankly, the hip hop undertones in the new show bother me immensely.

However, you are older than me. I was the last person in my class to get cable, though.

Yes, I grew up during that strange time when Atari was the coolest, VCRs were top-loading, and people bought their children boxing gloves, lawn darts, and other go-ahead-and-beat-the-living-hell-out-of-your-youn ger-brother-and-see-if-we-care sorts of presents at Christmastime. Sadly, I had no little brother. My family called me "target" until I turned 19.

I wish I'd been part of the Slip 'n' Slide generation...missed it by three and a half weeks.

I'm old enough to remember back then, but not old enough to colapse and die like some of the 'senior' members here.

I miss Knight Rider, old school NES, PONG, being able to buy fly-ass chucks and puma's for $15 and being non-conformist for wearing them, new wave on the radio, and getting a box of lemon heads for 10 cents at the store around the corner. I'm sure there's more but my eyes are getting all cloudy from the nostalgia.

Christ, I sound like my grandfather... maybe I am older than I thought.

I remember having to walk to school and home each day with my 5 sisters. It was a 10 mile hike, up hill, both ways, in the snow! and we only had 1 pair of arms between us, we had to share, but whoever got the arms also got to wear the 1 hand-me-down dress we had, cause the others couldn't wear it without arms. but that just meant that they had to carry the others to school. I dreaded the day I had the arms, it was bad enough being naked the other days, but to be the only boy in school having to wear a dress! eeewwwwww... I still have nightmares.

Ah, yes... I remember sitting around in the middle of February... we've just come home from school, and the entire house is really frickin' cold. We just have to wait for the TV to warm up, and then we can make some s'mores.

I remember back in Nam when me and my buddies used to treck through the jungles looking for some guy named Charlie.

I was mad alot back in those days because no matter how long we looked we could never find Charlie. It was always some guy named Chi Long or Hu Fung. Then these guys kept shooting us and everything and we were all yelling, "Hey, stop it. We're just looking for a guy named Charlie!" Then they dropped Agent Orange on me and I grew a tail.

Of course I'm wrong. I was intentionally misrepresenting your age for humourous effect (humourous spelled that way so that, as a Brit, you would knouw what wourd I meant)

From what you've said, you seem to be in your mid thirties, as am I.

Our friend Neild seems to be in his fifties, based on what he said. Although he could be younger than that, and his parents just had an old TV.

I'm confused. What does your sexual preference have to do with anything?

"Straight man" as opposed to the "funny man" in a classic comedy duo. Maybe this is a Brit thing, but I doubt it. Jon makes good use of the idea - normally with comic Jon as straight man. Try If I Had a Million Dollars [goats.com] for example - Jon & Megan play straight man to allow Diablo the punchline. Or for one everyone can read, try the first four strips of Shock and Awe [goats.com]
