***Spoilers*** Star Wars: Jedi - Mace Windu & Sora
posted Thursday, February 27, 2003 - 08:25 PM (#4177)
A new star wars comic came out the other day and, based on net rumor, I went to have a look at it in a comic store (sheeit there are a lot of star wars comics!).

In Star Wars Attack of the Clones I played Sora Bulq, the weequay jedi that is on the front right of the final circle.

The net rumors said the character was in this new comic.

So I bought it and read it. How happy am I? well,
  • I fight Mace Windu and he has problems even though I was already wounded
  • I am one of the few jedi that know his special secret fighting style
  • I was a lightsaber instructor at the jedi academy
  • I HAVE GONE TO THE DARK SIDE!!!

  yay me!

Congrats on your character's evilness and special stuff. Are you able to scan and post an image of your character so we know who to look for in that final circle?

Shazam!

a brief bio [geocities.com] which , interestingly enough, has the wrong person in the solo picture.. ahh these star wars fans are a funny bunch... in the picture of the final circle I am in the all beige with my head bowed and a blue light sabre (2nd from the right).

A search for "sora bulq" at Star Wars [starwars.com] will find some more stuff. There used to be a picture of my piercing blue eyes (that's all you can see with the mask on).

I'm holding out for a Sora Bulq action figure to guard my computer at home. He will join other mighty heroes like the Golden Age Sandman, Nightwing and, uh...Steamboat Willie.

Are you serious? You were actually in the movie? That's pretty cool.

I think the only problem with the comics and books (I'm much more a fan of the books) is that if they take place before or between (or even during) any of the movies, you know that the characters from the movie aren't going to die. You know Mace isn't going to die, because he's going to be in Ep. 3 (and draw your own conclusions from there). Sort of takes away some of the suspense.

So, what is his secret fighting style? I heard that Jackson tried for a sort of minimalist, quick, forceful, efficient style, instead of swinging the saber around so much like everyone else. He just goes flick flick flick and everything's dead. That's what I heard. Of course, what the actor does and what the character does can often be two completely different things.

Yep I was in the movie, yep it was cool.

I wasn't really aware that there were comics (I like the movies but I am not the dynedain *cough*nerd*cough* of star wars hehehe).

I doubt that there is any correlation between what Samuel Jackson the actor did and what the books are saying Mace Windu did, the comic indicates that he had this secret form or something, I watch the movies and he looks just as bad as anyone else in the movie's style. Everyone (except the kendo people of course ;) seems to like the idea of clubbing someone to death rather than cutting them with a sharp weapon (that is just my opinion of course hehehe).

It is a problem that you get when you need an actor to do a martial art which would probably take at least a couple of years training just to avoid looking stupid. When you get people like the guy that was Darth Maul or the guys in the matrix that have obviously spent a lot of time training it does look better. It doesn't bother me much though.

Nice try, Dynedain. Actors usually just need to find work and are elated when they get to work in the field they've been trained.

'Course Tor landed a more nifty movie acting role than many actors do. That perception could have more to do with all of us here being nerds or geeks.

Um, Samuel Jackson was in The Matrix. None of the actors in The Matrix were trained in martial arts before they were cast in The Matrix. They trained in martial arts for 6 months or so prior to filming.

Oooh I saw that comment and just went "wow, of all places to make a goof" hehehehe.

Mr Fishburne is way bigger and scarier than Mr Jackson could ever be IMHO[1].

I'm not sure, but I suspect (from reading interviews and stuff) that the training for the matrix was a lot longer and more martial arts oriented than AotC which was mostly Nick Gillard teaching the people his style of lightsabre fighting and I don't think he got them for anything like 6 months, I think it was a couple weeks tops.

The fight scenes in the matrix were much smaller also which I guess means it is easier to choreograph and train intensively for, which in turn means more control over the end product.

[1] Lawrence Fishburne turned up in a friends shop and was wearing all bike leathers and scared the crap out of her just with his "presence" - she is an actor.[2]

[2] I am not, I got the part in AotC because I sent a video of my Kendo class training to lucasfilm when I heard they were going to make it here, about 2 or 3 years before they started filming. I never heard a word and then Nick Gillard (Stunt Coordinator for AotC) just turned up at training asking for me, I felt pretty cool and basked in the adoration of my fellow students until they realised I didn't actually know a damn thing hehehehehe

What can I say, all bald men look the same to me.

I agree with your comment about Mr. Fishburne being scarier than Mr. Jackson. Mr. Fishburne also has more of a range [imdb.com] than Mr. Jackson. In AofC I was expecting Mr. Jackson to say, "Could you hand me my lightsabre? It's the one with 'Bad Motherfucker' on it."

[2] Great, no only did I make an ass of myself, I made false assumptions too. That must have been a record for me. Usually I split up those types of faux pas. Let this be a lesson to you kiddies.

There was a thread of TF.N's Jedi Council forums with a transcript of the AOTC text commentary (on dvd.starwars.com) and it said Sora Bulq was in the Gunship that you see explode after leaving the Arena! Yet he's in the Mace comic after his death...do we have another Boba Fett/Sarlacc debate on our hands? ;)

you mean this [theforce.net] one?

I think they have pretty much decided that it was just that he snuck away quietly whilst the whole thing was going on, probably due to his dark side of the force coming out or something. Or he could have just been completely knackered from all the fighting and in dire need of a nice cuppa.

I honestly don't see a boba fett type bruhaha starting up as Sora Bulq is nowhere near as popular as Boba Fett... plus the movie just wasn't as cool as the first half of RotJ, hard to work that much energy up about it, even for the rabid fans, I suspect.
