I fully understand that, and your comments are completely valid.
What I had a problem with on the 'diaries' was the repetive 'in case you didn't get it the first 40 times, here it is again' attitude. Obviously, the author has some talent at humorous writing, as evidence by most of the other entries. But to downplay that by beating the dead horse over and over again (pardon the pun) is a poor decision.
My homophobe comment, while perhaps in poor judgement, was made from experience. Many people beat you over the head with the same joke in a slightly different format. I've noticed that those who do it with homosexual-related humor are either, a) openly gay and want to make sure
everyone knows it (as is the case w/ Ellen...btw, i had a roomate like this), or b) extremely insecure and homophobic (some people i've known, and the stereotypical redneck, football playing, midwest, farmboy).
So the intent could have been to inflame and insult (as I at first assumed) or it could have been to promote tolerance. Unfortuneately what I have found is that trying to promote tolerance in this way (overwhelming inundation that is, not the humor) is actually more likely to aggrevate situations than to help them. Thats why I pointed out Will & Grace in comparison to Ellen. W&G is able to use humor to increase tolerance (and from observed friend's reactions to the show - I think it has done a good job) because homosexuality is not the basis for every joke and plot development. Ellen, on the other hand, made every single joke be about her homosexuality, which quickly became irritating.
