So I ought to be in belgium come september.

Initially I will be jumping around in a dress hitting people with sticks.

After that, say a week into september, I am looking at imbibing.

Anyone have recommended imbibing places or care to join for for a couple?

I believe I will be starting from brussels.

Kulminator [xs4all.nl] in Antwerp is a required stop for any who love the hop. Also, a la Mort Subite [alamortsubite.com] in Brussels; the signature beer is a lovely thing.

Excellent decision to come to Belgium!

I live in Brussels full time, and I can tell you this: any pub recommended by non-Belgians will be something for tourists where beer is over-priced!

There is one exception to this rule, though. It's called the "Delirium Cafe" which holds the record for most different beers offered (at least 2004 in stock all the time). There, you can taste beers from all over the world (but prices can be very high for some particularly exotic beers). It's right in the center of town, so you can go there after your sightseeing!

If you want to get a taste of the night life of real Belgians, walk through the streets of the center on a Friday night! Prices are generally higher in the center though.

If you intend on having a few drinks every night, I recommend going to a place called "Cimetière d'Ixelles" (it's an area, not a bar). That's where all the students go for a beer! So it's cheaper, there are people there every night of the week, you can chose among many bars, and people are generally more open to talk to complete strangers.

Have fun during your trip!

Darn. I thought this thread would be an announcement that you'd been nominated for the Rory Award.

I was just in Belgium last month, mostly Antwerp. You'll like it, the local beers are much cheaper than any other beverage except possibly water. Can't remember the names of any pubs, though (always a good sign).

Depending on your budget, you could always hop a train/plane to the Oktoberfest in Munich - then you can imbibe while jumping around in leather pants hitting people with sticks. The beer is nicer in Belgium though!

You must go to PLANET COCKTAIL BAR and have a Long Island Iced Tea.
