Futurama vs. Family Guy
posted Wednesday, February 07, 2007 - 11:00 PM (#37293)

I've been watching both a lot lately (Adult Swim ftw!), and have just about decided that while I can watch Family Guy and laugh at it, it's more and more just a framework for dumb jokes, especially after it's much-hyped 'resurrection'. Amusing, but in the end, not totally satisfying. Kinda like those off-brand candy bars you used to get for fundraising.

Futurama though just kept growing better and better the more I get to see. Actual stories, great guests, a few repeated jokes, but subtle, not with that exaggerated wink the folks in Quahog seem to give you.

Here's hoping that bringing it back doesn't spoil what seems so good.

Discuss?

Matt Groening's comics also don't tend to have 10 minute fillers of a character laughing inanely.

Which is worse, a slow chainsaw to the back of the head, or three episodes of "American Dad"?

dull or sharp?

meh. "American Dad" is still worse in either case.

OH. 3 episodes? "American Dad" easily.

3 episodes of "American Dad" or 3 Urethra Weasels?

The very best Family Guy (probably one of the Brian-and-Stewie road-movie episodes) isn't even in the same realm as the very best Futurama ("Roswell That Ends Well").
The characters on Futurama grew and changed and had depth--we rooted for Fry and Leela to get together, we watched Kif and Amy's romance develop, we learned Leela's true origin. Except for Peter's job, nothing ever changes on Family Guy, to the point that they even referenced the fact that Joe's wife has been pregnant since the show started eight years ago (and, more recently, Stewie reminded Brian that he's one year old and Brian responded, "Still?").

Hell, even King of the Hill has had things change (Nancy ended her affair with John Redcorn, Joseph hit puberty and was completely redesigned, Luann's boyfriend Buckley got killed, and most recently she got pregnant by the new boyfriend).

One of the neatest things I've heard about the new Futurama project is that they're picking up two years after the end of the series, so there will be changes to explore. I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on with Fry and the gang in 3006.

Hm.. I'd take Futurama over any of the previous options. I just don't dig King of the Hill humor, Family Guy is just meh, and I've only seen one episode of American Dad, which basically looked kind of like Family Guy.

Matt Groening's creations, in the other hand ... I'd watch them anyday. (Just check how long The Simpsons have been out there...)
