I've never understood why the rest of the country looks down on New York (before September, anyway). The people here are some of the smartest, nicest and most intelligent folks I've ever met. I think our distaste for bullshit and our tendency to be vocal about it is what got us our reputation.
That aside, here's another neat-o NYC phenomenon: When the power went out south of 14th street this weekend, people jumped in and helped direct traffic [janegalt.net] while the traffic lights were out, even going so far as to coordinate with people on adjacent blocks with hand signals to keep things flowing smoothly.
Yet another reason why I think New Yorkers are pretty freaking cool.
