Oh, holy crap...
posted Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 03:47 PM (#33234)

I'm using dial-up. Somebody shoot me and take all the pain away; or at least try to make me feel better. I am looking for comfort in these dark days; for we are poor and unable to acquire anything faster at the moment [1], and are using -cringe- AOL [2].

[1]What's the best way to go for an affordable, faster internet connection?

[2]Which "provider" would you reccomend?

When did you move to Indiana?

Screw that.

Why did you move to Indiana?

Cable modem is the best bang for your buck. High-speed internet plus way to many channels of shit on the tv to choose from.

It may, however, not be the least buck for your bang.

go to the website for your phone service provider (assuming you aren't depending on cell phones only) and see what they offer. might be able to get a deal.

++cable modem

Can you have cable internet without cable tv? I'm thinking of switching to a dish. It's way cheaper.

How can you have any pudding, if you don't eat your meat?

I mean, yes, it's possible. The question is - why would you? It's usually about a $10 difference in price for all the Jamie Oliver and Law&Order reruns you can stand.

The dirty little secret about dishes is ... uploads != downloads.

So if, for example, you frequently work remotely... then a 56k upload speed is not for you, even with a 1.5M download speed to "make up" for it.

i've also heard that the dish doesn't always have great reliability in heavy snow/rain.

also also, you usually get a better price on the cable internet if you have cable tv with it...

It depends. Technically, it may not be possible. I know with, say, Roadrunner in Rochester, NY, to allow the cable internet, they have to remove some of the filters that would otherwise prevent you from receiving the cable TV signals. So basically, if you have cable internet, you are forced to have available the basic cable package in many cases.

The trick is seeing if your cable company is dumb (or if they think you're dumb). Ask to have cable internet installed but not cable TV. If they allow it, you'll probably have free basic cable as a consequence.

Actually, I moved from Indiana to St. Louis and then to Pacific, MO. But, it's pretty much the same thing.

Cable modem is the best bang for your buck.

Tom reminded me that we don't have cable out here or dsl...so I'm kind of screwed. He's thinking that maybe we should move next year...unless of course they pull their heads out of their asses and get some cable lines out in this part of the state that civilization forgot.

Syrup is like pot. You're not supposed to inhale.

Or is that oral sex?

It is only in Indiana that they would call it 'coughing' syrup - however accurate it may be to label an expectorant using that term. The rest of the proper English speaking world calls it 'cough' syrup.

Although, the people in New Orleans do make groceries when the rest of us shop, so it could be that they'd also be wrong in the same way.

You have to dereference pointers several times, by way of at least one President, to get the connection between what I said about 'coughing' syrup and oral sex.

Do you want the full derivation - or shall I leave that as an exercise for Msrs. Kinyon or McLin - both of whom show reasonable promise at grazing off this particular cliff...
