Name that Tune
posted Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 10:11 PM (#27499)
This is a new message board game.

Post an obscure or obfuscated reference to a song.

Other people try to guess. The person who guesses gets to make the next reference.

I'll start! And nobody will get this one...

Tynic and Tor's theme song.

The fundamental problem here, Zammy, is that no one can play the game; no one can take the next turn unless they know the correct answer, which, by your own admission, nobody will get.

Have fun playing tennis with the wall.

I could see that applying to Tor, but not to Tynic.

Nahh, it's Aretha Franklin singing "I'm Drinking Again".

Mariah Carey and R. Kelly are both R&B artists. Neither is appropriately classed as a blues singer.

Aretha Franklin, on the other hand, certainly sang the blues. Please note the title of one of her albums: Aretha Sings the Blues.

Incidentally, Zamphir, which version of "I'm Drinking Again" did Aretha sing? I've managed to find reference to two separate sets of lyrics, one by Sinatra and the other by Ry Cooder.

That would be the one on Aretha Sings the Blues [amazon.com]. You know, right there at track one.

But for even getting (and then missing) that far, I'll give you the next go.

However you choose to interpret that last statement is likely fine with me.

I still can't find the lyrics. But then, I'm doing a half-assed job of searching, so that's only fair.

Also: I get better flirt from the sales reps who call in at work.

Anyhow, I suppose my selection could be referred to as GeminiCrash's theme. It's suitably obscure, gacked from my boyfriend's hippie music but by girls. Well, a band fronted by girls. Girly enough to play Lilith Fair.

God, I'm going to give it away, aren't I? I'll shut up now.

Here I thought my comment was far to uninspired to be even vaguely mistaken for flirt.

Both of you:

1.) Sure, your local store stocks Mariah Carey and R. Kelly in R&B. They also call them artists.

2.) O.K., it is a blues song. Out of the catalog of blues great Johnny Mercer.

3.) Aretha remains no blues singer, she sings R&B (which is a genre that is an offshoot of the blues, and does not include the blues) or what could be called 'soul'. Sure, she can 'sing the blues', but so can Eric Clapton and Bart Simpson. What you mean to say is that she sings 'black people music, but not jazz.' Which goes to show how little you know . . .

4.) Last piece of evidence: otherwise the name of the album would be Aretha Sings.

I don't recall saying that she only sang the blues. In fact, you were the one to imply that she performed in just one genre of music. Artists can branch out - Clapton, as you've brought him up, has played the blues (or at least BB King thinks he has, and what BB says is good enough for me) but he also played psychedelic rock as well as more mainstream numbers.

Fuck me, I don't know why I bother. I'm going to go watch commercials - if I don't, it's like I'm stealing TV.

Sure, I was a little close-minded. But, you see, I'm not really trying to antagonize you, which is the trouble with a double response.

And yes, I know all of that about Clapton, thanks. I would say he can play the blues, as far as I know. But I wouldn't give him 'sing the blues'.

They don't pay you if you don't watch the show . . .

There is an eery scene in The Dark Crystal [imdb.com] which takes place on the Black Lake as Jen and Kira float in a giant beetle shell during twilight. Kira begins to sing, then Jen accompanies her with his double-flute. The melody is sweet but spooky. Then they are interrupted as a Crystal Bat flies overhead and they must duck for cover.

There is a very delightful music (and multi-media) artist from Seattle who has incorporated countless samples from various eclectic sources into her compositions. A song which was on one of her very early albums about a decade ago opened with this aforementioned vocal/flute melody. This song also appeared in a series of anthologies from her record label, showcasing dozens of talented musicians.

Do you know this song? Do you know this artist? Do you know which album, or which anthology, from which record label (and sub-label)?

Do you listen to any of the other artists on that independent label? I highly recommend the vast majority of their releases.

Is the answer "Wild Thing"? Oh, i must be thinking of The Ventures-- wrong decade, as they probably haven't had a hit since you were born. Will you pretty please give another clue? Or is "gacked from my boyfriend's hippie music but by girls" supposed to be quite sufficient? I don't even really know what you mean by "hippie music", nor am i familiar with gacking, so i guess i don't stand much chance of guessing correctly.
