Johnny Cash is on The Muppet Show.

Man, I love the muppets. Two nights ago they had Dudley Moore.

When i was in Middle School (a couple years before you were even born!) Tuesday nights were the best part of the week. I would almost wet myself in anticipation of each episode.

Some skits stick in my memory more than others ("Trudge, trudge, trudge, trudge..."; "I feel pretty/ oh, so pretty/ so pretty, and witty, and bright..."; "And now the continuing story of a Quack who's gone to the dogs!"; "Tune in next week to find out what happens to Link Hearthrob on Pigs... in... Spaaaace...!!!").

I don't know why, but the pale blue, bearded, spooky Phantom of the Opera muppet really scared the bejeezus out of me. And i despised Sam the Bald Eagle, at the tender age of eight.

Aaahh.... thanks for provoking a momentary stroll down memory lane. You've got great taste!

Uncle Deadly? He was one of my favorites (always reminded me of Vincent Price). I was de-bejeezused by the blue square-headed monster from the "Got anything CHEAPER?" sketch.

When I was in middle school, the CBS station in New York would play The Muppet Show six nights a week, at 7:30. The only reason it didn't show on Sundays was 60 Minutes. Damn you, Dan Rather! Damn you to hell!!

Um. Anyway. The Johnny Cash episode was great, if only for the fabulous chicken-herding visuals from Gonzo during Ghost Riders In The Sky.

I miss The Muppet Show. I'm too young to have watched it all the time but I remember when they started reairing it. My mom and I would plop down in front of the t.v. and have a mother/daughter moment with The Muppets. I don't remember ever being particularly scared by any of The Muppets, but I know that a couple of The Muppets annoyed the hell out of me.

I used to watch Muppet Babies all the time too.

Eh, I remember watching the Muppets every Thursday when I was a kid. I also remember them having guest cameos and not knowing who the hell they were. Now I watch reruns and I still have no idea who these people are. Damn the times.

And it's not just the quadropeds either, birds too, yes! Beneath our fine feathers, birds wear NOTHING! Nothing at all. Abso.... oh...... can someone hand me a robe? Mm-hmm."

When I was a kid, I thought Sam was a little unnerving -- like an anthropomorphic bird-version of Bert from Sesame Street -- but now, I think he's quite amusing.

A couple muppet stories:

When my little brother (now 14) was about 5 or 6, they were showing the Muppet Show twice a day on Nickelodeon. His very favorite episode was the one with Elton John (which got played about once every couple of weeks b/c there just aren't that many episodes). So he decided that he had an imaginary friend named Elton John, who went with him everywhere.

This is a very fun thing to know about a 14-year-old male, especially when his buddies are around.

When I was about 3 or 4, there was some kind of traveling museum-like display about the muppets that my dad took me to. I don't remember much of it b/c I was so young, but I must have seen something that gave me nightmares. In the nightmare, all the Sesame Street muppets had huge fangs. Kermit bit a little boy, and then Cookie Monster started eating all the other muppets.

I finally figured out, many years later, that they must have been showing videos of the pre-Muppets sketches Jim Henson did on various variety shows. One of these featured a puppet very much like cookie monster, but with fangs, who ate other muppets. (Or something like that - it has now been several years since I saw this and figured out where my nightmares came from.)
