Kingdom of Loathing

Just wondering if any of you out there play the SMMOTBRPG (Slightly-Massively-Multiplayer Online Turn-Based Role-Playing Game) Kingdom of Loathing [kingdomofloathing.com]. I've been playing it for about a month, and it's pretty cool. It's definitely something that many of you would enjoy (I noticed that at least one of you already does).

It's sort of a parody of many RPGs, and makes fun of the whole fantasy genre. The currency is Meat, the classes are Pastamancer, Sauceror, Turtle Tamer, Seal Clubber, Accordion Thief, and Disco Bandit. The writing is also pretty clever, and it's loaded with both bad and good puns. It takes a little patience at the beginning to get started, but it gets really cool after that.

If any of you play it, feel free to look me up, or attack me, or whatever. It'd be cool if we could start a Goatsfan clan.

And to make this thread relate just a little to Goats, I'll mention this: I have a Familiar (basically a pet that helps you in combat) that I named Toothgnip, who's an "Angry Goat", and one named Diablo, who's a Cocoabo (basically a chicken made of chocolate). But I usually use either my Blood-Faced Volleyball "Killball" or my Baby Gravy Fairy "Doombringer".

Yep, that's what I meant by "I noticed that at least one of you already does".

I figured it was a cool enough game to get its own thread though.

Zamph, are you playing? I see there's a Zampharr and a Zamphire, but I doubt you'd spell it more than one way.

I'm in a clan that needs more members. It's called "Mythmakers". I sent the three of you messages (and booze) about it already.

We have a full gym, a meat tree, plus special bonuses to anyone who joins.

I stopped playing it a few months ago. KOL was interesting at one point. Now, I find it monotonously boring. Some of my friends have been playing it since I started and they've obsessive/compulsively gotten themselves in the magicalness top 10. When they went on vacation, they had me do their turns so they wouldn't fall behind. I think they're crazy, but I'm happy that they had me do that because it made me never want to touch it again.

Now, I'm obsessed with Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates [puzzlepirates.com]. Saying "Yarr!!" before battle makes me smile, and my crew is a lot of fun. So, I can say that it's a good thing.

I tried Yohoho, and it was pretty cool, but I'm not paying $20/month for a puzzle game.

I'm just waiting for my copy of the World of Warcraft Collector's Edition to get here from Wal-Mart's infernal warehouses, and then I'll probably only play KOL while I'm at work.

Hmm...

This thread got me curious.

I haven't played an online game in about 5 years or so. I swore them off when I finally sat down and counted how much time I was spending on them.

Slow night tonight, so I thought I'd give it a go for old times sake. I actually resurected my old mudding name of DamienPinkytoe for the occasion.

Seems pretty funny so far, though I imagine the newness will fade.

I really like the idea that they only let you play so much in one day. Stops the inner dork from completely taking over and spending all one's free time there.

It's only 10 bucks a month unless you buy more than one month worth of time at once. I find it to be more than a puzzle game as the most interesting parts come after you join a crew. I also look at it as 10 bucks a month is just not going to see some crappy movie on opening night once a month. I've already gotten my first 10 bucks worth out of it :-) That's more than I can say for most movies I've seen.

Oh, I thought it was $20 at one point. Might've been during the beta phase, when they were still trying to figure out what the monthy price would be.

Maybe I'll give it another look.
