Riddles in the night
posted Tuesday, November 16, 2004 - 10:43 PM (#22700)
So I kept Dan awake for a while last night with these:

How do you start a bee race?

One, two, bee.....GO!

How do you start a teddy bear race?

Ready, Teddy..... GO!

How do you start a Samurai race?

Ich, ni, san..... GO!

How do you start a Jelly race?

On your marks, Get set.... GO!

Note that the last 2 I actually made up all by my drunken self, and the last one was a spur of the moment one. She hates me with a burning passion.

Einstein's Puzzle (Score: 2)
posted Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 06:51 PM (#22921)
I'm sure most of you have heard of this one by now, but for those who haven't:

Einstein's Puzzle
There are 5 houses in 5 different colors.
In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
These 5 owners drink a certain drink, smoke a certain
brand of tobacco, and keep a certain kind of pet.
No two owners have the same kind of pet, smoke the
same brand of tobacco, or drink the same drink.

HINTS:
1. The Brit lives in the red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The green house is on the left of the white house.
5. The green house owner drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall raises birds.
7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The man living in the center house drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house on the left.
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the one who smokes Dunhill.
12. The owner who smokes Bluemaster drinks juice.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

QUESTION: Who owns the fish?

It's more an exercise in deductive reasoning and patience than a riddle, but still good dorky fun.

The problem with these puzzles is that they're all variants on the same basic logical grid-pattern. It's like doing crosswords that all have the same clues, just in different permutations.

Anyway. The German owns the fish.

I agree. This one is a particularly taxing one, with six variables to join, but after you've figured out the method, it's just a matter of time till you've solved it.

My problem with a lot the MIT puzzles I looked over is that the can be sometimes arbitrary in their answers. I admire the depth of their geekery, but felt that many were lacking in finesse.

As for the original puzzle forum, I didn't read over a lot, but it seemed that people on the forum were trying to solve all of the hard riddles that I read with math instead of logic.

Example: the 100 prisoners in a round jail cell puzzle.

I won't go over the details of the puzzle, as you can view it by following the first link submitted in this thread, but from reading everyone's response to it, they were all trying to create some complicated logarithm to solve it.

It seemed to me that if I were one of the prisoners, I'd have done something simpler like so: The first meeting is in a courtyard. Courtyards have rocks. All 100 prisoners grab a rock. Whenever they are called to enter for the first time, they put their rock on the ground. Then count all the rocks...if it equals 100 you say you're all accounted for and be done with it.

Sure, the warden could be tricky and take some of the rocks away or put more in, but if the warden is set on screwing you...well then you're more or less dead anyway...so why wait around forever to find out.
