For more than a month, i've had this fantasy that i'm going to open my browser to the forums, and find that i've been bequeathed some actual Moderator Points.
Then i open my mouth (well-- actually, i type with my fingers, but you don't mind a little figurative liberty) and post a message such as this.
Consequently, my fantasy does not seem likely to be realized soon.
Perhaps i shouldn't assign the forums' front webpage to my Safari browser's Bookmarks hot-key "Command-3", nor to my Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro trackball's Direct-Launch button #3.

I've been thinking the same thing; but I've only put up 2 or so posts in the last month, so I was only half expecting moderation.

What i meant was: "find that i've been bequeathed the ability to apply Moderator Points", as opposed to receiving any moderations of my own posts; i.e., expecting to be able to go moderate other peoples' posts of my choosing.

I've been betrothed quite often, though I haven't checked more recently. it seemed as long as I posted daily and got the occasional positive mod, that as soon as I stopped posting for more than 2 days or so, up would come the moderator points. I got them 3 times in a row once, although I gave up dealing them out half way through the second lot. Thought someone else should get a turn, you know?

I'm glad to know it's not just me - I have found myself, on no less than three occasions in the past two months, sitting there going "Hm. I have mod points, and I don't really want to use them because I'm a lazy bum."
I usually solve this problem by selecting a karma level at random and modding only people with that level of karma. This time, though, I can actually put them to use - point me towards the posts worthy of moderation, and I shall mod!

I'm reasonably clear about these forum mechanics. In addition to the "no moderation in discussions wherein one is a participant" rule, there's another factor. Although i couldn't tell you the specific formula, the moderation points obviously are not awarded to the people who write the most (nor fewest?) comments within a certain recent timeframe. Thus, any blabbermouth (such as myself) whose usual participation deviates a certain significant amount from the norm (story of my life) is less likely to win the Moderation Privilege Lottery.
This doesn't bother me-- i was just commenting on my inability to dole out points, because there have been a number of posts in frequent weeks which i felt were underrated. I hate to redundantly add too many "You're-so-right!"-esque comments in a thread, and the points would be a better alternative.
Lacking the latter and disliking the former, i've opted to say nothing. Yes, that's right-- i actually think of even more opinions and comments to add to some of these discussions; and you are, in fact, spared eighty or ninety percent of my potential remarks. Disquieting, n'est-ce pas? I've refrained from joining a dozen threads in the past month simply because i was hoping to get some Moderation points and apply them to those Conversational points most worthy.

If they're still using the slash code, writing comments is (nearly?) irrelevant. The formula is to rank everyone by page views, then drop the top and bottom so many.
Cheers,
Graham

Clearly, this explains my experience. I hit that hotkey almost as often as the ones for my webmail accounts.

... You know, some of us are familiar with Airheads beyond Comedy Central. Hell, I had a discussion about it just the other day, provoked by a completely different cable channel. (VH1, actually - 100 Most Metal Moments was certainly amusing to watch, but perhaps not in quite the way it had been intended.)
In your defense, however, the fact that it's been on TV is one of the factors that stopped me from modding Zamphir up as an Obscure Reference. The others, of course, were that a: I have already posted in this thread, and b: I used up my mod points two days ago. But the intention was there!

Yeah, I hate to break your theory into little tiny pieces, but...
I don't have cable TV.
I haven't seen Comedy Central is at least three months.
If Airheads is showing on Comedy Central, that's news to me.
If Grosse Pointe Blank had been showing on Comedy Central when I brought it up recently... That's also just coincidence.
I happen to own Grosse Point Blank on DVD - but I haven't watched it in about 6 months.
My brain is just really good at reguritating trivia.
I just wish that it was good at telling me the time of my own death.. but I'm happier with two eyes.

Movie? I was going generic Norse mythos, in which Odin All-Father puts out his own eye and gains a total understanding of time.
I'm just shocked that none of you recognize my own reference. Or perhaps it was simply so obscure that nobody got it. But it can't be that hard to figure out, can it? I mean, it has the same source as my .sig.
