Idolatry : Has it gone too far?
posted Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 01:07 PM (#14514)
Ok, like many other folks, I tuned into fox last night to watch all of the bad auditions, (and boy did they ever deliver!) and while watching I realized that William Hung [flowgo.com] has not only received over 7 million hits on his website, but has also been offered $25,000.00 [www.fuse.tv] by Fuse T.V. and Koch Entertainment for a record deal and music video of his first release.

Where does this leave the music industry? Is Pokey [goats.com] going to have a greatest hits album this spring? Has American Idol gone down the toilet? Will we ever hear the end of William Hung? When is Simon Cowell going to get his? [flowgo.com]

I can only hope Fox will drop this show next season, but that's unlikely because of all the corporate sponsorships tied into it now, even if they wanted to take a nosedive in the ratings.

(Sigh.)

Oh well, at least it's still amusing, if nothing else.

By asking "has American Idol gone down the toilet", you're making it sound like it was ever anywhere BUT the toilet. That show is all that is wrong in the world of music.

Pedanticism: [goats.com]

Sorry to disappoint, however this thread's about Social idolatry, not Religious [goats.com] idolatry. That thread's aleady been spun.

Oh well.

Oooh, nobody's ever brought that up here... what a novel concept. I bet we would all be able to have a respectful thought-out discussion about that where everyone will walk away and feel content that everything is okay.

i hate arguing/discussing religion. The only thing that happens is that a lot of people tell other people that what they think is stupid, then the same thing is said back and forth for a while until everyone becomes annoyed for about, oh, 3 weeks and then it's brought up all over again. Woohoo!!!! I am so excited for this rumble in futility to begin!

Only after a year of developing any sort of musical taste in my later years of high school, I've quickly shunned the radio and television as sources of new and great music. What does radio and television know anyway? All the core entertainment industry gives two shits about is what's marketable, and since most Americans don't demand more from their music, the popular music industry forcefeeds the apathetic listening public whatever shit they feel like shoveling that day.

Anyone ever hear of the Rx Bandits? If you haven't, you need to do anything you can to get your hands on one of their CDs. Absolutely great music that has a distinct soul and a vision. Not like this shit they trot out on the radio every day.

As far as American Idol goes, man, don't get me started. I watched that show last year when I was in the dorms, and I rarely saw any individuals on that show with musical talent beyond their voice. I didn't have a serious appreciation of music until I started to learn standard six string and four string bass. A good voice comes from years of practice, but the coordination that comes with playing an instrument with skill as well as vocal skill is an ability that our public takes for granted.

Just my two. Sorry if I stepped on any toes here.

You know, I started this thread with the intention of all of us jumping on the commercial music Bashing Bandwagon. However, no battle plan outlasts the firt shot fired... But reading this thread, I just realized That I in my own small way have sold out to the commercialism of music. I always buy cd's from a few of my favorite bands, but by and large, I end up getting the new "pop"stuff stuck in my head, it's infectious! They've got it anywhere you go! Elevators, waiting rooms, lobbies, malls, stores, television, we're even spoon-fed the soothing sounds of light jazz whenever we call a 1-800 number to get help with anything!

And I HATE Kenny G!

Gah. Gaaah! [flowgo.com]

I've had it. I think I am going to buy a P.A. system to strap onto the old hippie van I've got out back and blast Bad Religion everywhere I go, then at least the masses can listen to music that is not crammed full of canned crass commercialism. How the hell did modern music end up in the toilet? Here's a clue... [goats.com] Most of those folks don't only have one business, and the bigger the record companies get, the crappier the music (and society's choices therein) keep getting. This does not bode well for the future of the industry. Someday soon the corporate gluttony and prostitution of genuine talent (rare as it may be), will all come tumbling down under the weight of its own greed. There it's been said.

Is there any chance when you give us a recommendation to "do anything we can" to get hold of a piece of music that you at least include a brief description of the music involved? I mean, sure I enjoy the slaughter of corporate sellouts working at the local music store but I'm not going to do it just because some guy that I have no knowledge of whatsoever on the net told me to... I mean how embarrassed would I be if I killed for the album then found that your taste in music is located in your arse?

You, personally?

I think it would take a lot more than that to get even a hint of added color to your cheeks.

I think even being found passed out naked and surrounded by fourty pregnant nuns, twelve empty kegs, and three dead sheep wouldn't embarras you.

Even if the kegs were Coors Light, you wouldn't be embarrased.

No, actually, it's one of those who tries to be a heavy beer wannabe. An El Salvadorian friend of mine switches to Coors from his usual Corona or El Presidente when he wants something even lighter in the summertime.

Jesus. An even lighter beer than Coors? Coors is pretty damn light all on it's own, so it's hard to believe it even has a light variant.

My philosophy: If you can see through it, you might as well drink water.
